The goby in the same rock pool as the shanny, and the fish that makes the blenny-versus-goby question answerable — because it carries the sucker disc on its belly that every goby has and no blenny does.
A stocky, big-headed little fish that sits on the bottom of a pool rather than wedging itself in a crevice, and holds station on rock in surge that would roll anything without a grip.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. Six to twelve centimetres usually, heavy in the head and shoulders and tapering behind. Mottled dark brown, purplish or olive, often with darker blotches along the flank, and — the useful mark — a PALE OR ORANGE BAND ALONG THE TOP EDGE OF THE FRONT DORSAL FIN, which is brightest on adults and is the most reliable colour character a British goby offers.
AND THE TWO STRUCTURAL CHARACTERS THAT MATTER MORE THAN ANY MARKING. TWO SEPARATE DORSAL FINS with a clear gap between them, where a blenny has one continuous fin. And on the belly, the PELVIC FINS FUSED INTO A ROUND SUCKER DISC. Turn the fish gently in a wet palm and it is unmistakable: a small cup where a blenny has two separate little fins.
WHAT THE SUCKER IS FOR. It is a holdfast. A goby in a surging gully or a draining pool clamps to the rock and stays put while the water moves over it, which is how a fish with no great swimming power lives on an exposed shore. It is not a strong grip in absolute terms and it does not need to be — it only has to beat the wash.
WHERE IT IS. All round Britain and Ireland on rocky and mixed shores, from the mid-shore down, under stones, in pools, in weed and in crevices, and commoner on the south and west coasts than in the north-east. Lower on the shore and more southern than the shanny on average, so a pool with both is normal and a pool with only one is normal too.
AND IT IS NOT QUARRY. Like the shanny, it is here because it is what people actually catch on light tackle and in nets, and because a site that could not tell one from a blenny was failing a beginner at the exact moment they became curious.

- TWO SEPARATE DORSAL FINS with a distinct gap between them. A blenny has ONE long dorsal running most of the back. This alone separates every goby from every blenny and needs no colour and no counting.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Matures within its first year or two and lives around five to ten years, which is long for a fish of this size. Eggs are laid in a sheltered space — under a stone, in a crevice, inside an empty shell — and are guarded by the male until they hatch. Larvae are planktonic for a period before settling to the shore. Adults are strongly site-attached, so an animal moved to a different pool has been displaced rather than released.
Spawning runs through late winter and spring, earlier than many British shore fish. The male prepares and defends a nest site under a stone or in a crevice, several females may lay in it, and he guards and fans the eggs until they hatch. Eggs are attached to the rock surface in a layer, so a stone turned in spring may carry a nest on its underside.
Feeding and senses
An opportunist ambusher and picker taking small crustaceans, worms, molluscs and whatever the tide delivers, hunting from a sitting position on the bottom rather than by cruising. It feeds as the tide covers the shore and shelters as it falls, which is why it turns up under stones at low water.
Eyes set high on the head and angled upward, suited to watching the water above from a position flat on the rock — the arrangement of an ambush feeder rather than a pursuer. Chemical sense is good and matters in turbid shore water. The lateral line detects the movement of prey and the approach of a hand equally well, which is why they are quick.
Through the year
Present on the same shore year-round, moving a little deeper in hard winter weather and up into the intertidal in the warmer months. Males are on nests from late winter through spring, which is the period when turning stones does the most harm.
Distribution
North-east Atlantic from Scotland and Ireland south to Senegal, through the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. On rocky and mixed shores from the mid-intertidal to the shallow subtidal, under stones, in pools, among weed and on rock faces.

Why anglers care
Not quarry, and significant for exactly that reason. It is among the commonest captures in British light rock fishing and species hunting, one of the standard finds in a child's net, and half of the identification question that a site holding only blennies could not answer. Its importance is about who meets it and when, not about what it is worth on a scoresheet.
Handling and returning
The same proportion problem as every rock-pool fish: a hook that is nothing in a bass is a large object in a nine-centimetre goby, and a drop onto dry rock can kill one.
Wet hands, always. Unhook with forceps rather than fingers, over water where you can, and use barbless or crushed barbs so it takes seconds.
IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE SUCKER, turn the fish gently in a cupped wet palm rather than pinching it, look, and put it back. It is worth showing a child once and it is not worth handling a fish twice for.
RETURN IT TO THE POOL IT CAME FROM, because rock gobies are site-attached and a fish moved elsewhere has been displaced.
AND PUT THE STONE BACK THE WAY IT WAS. In late winter and spring the underside may carry a nest of eggs and the male guarding them.

Goby or blenny: the one identification in British fishing with a binary answer
Most identification questions in this catalogue end in a judgement — how red is red, how deep is deep, how many spots is several. This one does not, and that makes it the best thing a beginner can learn first.
THE TWO CHARACTERS, AND EITHER ALONE IS SUFFICIENT.
COUNT THE DORSAL FINS. A GOBY has TWO, separated by a clear gap: a short rounded one at the front and a longer one behind. A BLENNY has ONE, running most of the length of the back — in the shanny with a notch in the middle of it, which is the thing that misleads people, because a notch is not a gap and a notched fin is still one fin.
LOOK AT THE BELLY. A GOBY's pelvic fins are FUSED INTO A ROUND SUCKER DISC, a small cup on the underside between the pectoral fins. A BLENNY's pelvics are two separate little fins, reduced to a few rays, sitting ahead of the pectorals like a pair of fingers. This is definitive, it takes one gentle turn of the fish in a wet palm, and once seen it is never forgotten.
AND THE THING YOU CAN USE BEFORE YOU TOUCH IT. A goby sits ON the bottom of the pool, flat, propped on its pectorals, and darts. A shanny wedges itself INTO something — a crevice, under a stone, into weed — and stays. Watch the pool for thirty seconds before you net anything and you will usually have the answer already.
WHAT DOES NOT WORK, and this is worth saying because it is what people try. COLOUR does not work: both are mottled brown, both change with the ground, and both go darker when annoyed. SIZE does not work: they overlap almost completely. HEAD SHAPE half works — a blenny's head is blunter and more rounded, a goby's is broader across the top with the eyes set closer together and higher — but it is a comparison, and a comparison is no use when you have one fish.
THEN, HAVING ESTABLISHED IT IS A GOBY, WHICH GOBY. Rock goby: pale or orange band along the upper edge of the front dorsal, stocky, on rocky ground. Black goby: taller fins, darker, more often on mud and in estuaries and harbours. Common and sand gobies: small, pale, translucent-looking, on sand rather than rock. Beyond that the separations are fin ray counts and are not shore-side identifications, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

What a sucker on a fish is actually for, and why it decides where it lives
The fused pelvic disc is not a curiosity. It is the piece of engineering that puts this fish where it is, and it explains behaviour a reader will otherwise find baffling.
THE PROBLEM IT SOLVES. A rocky shore is a place where water moves violently in both directions several times a day. A small fish with modest swimming power that wants to live there has three options: hide in something, hold onto something, or be somewhere else. Blennies took the first. Gobies took the second.
HOW IT WORKS. The two pelvic fins, which in most fish sit as a separate pair on the belly, are joined along their edges into a shallow cup. Pressed against smooth rock it holds by suction — not powerfully, but easily enough to beat the wash in a gully or the drain of a pool.
WHAT THAT LETS IT DO. Sit in the open on a rock face where surge would roll an unattached fish, which is a feeding position rather than a hiding place. Stay put in a pool that is draining rather than being swept out with it. And hold station in a current while waiting for the tide to bring food past.
AND WHY IT EXPLAINS THE BEHAVIOUR YOU SEE. A goby in a bucket or a tray will often clamp to the side, which people read as the fish being stuck or distressed and it is neither — it is doing what it does on rock. A goby that darts a short distance and stops dead rather than swimming on is using the disc as a brake.
THE SAME SOLUTION, ARRIVED AT SEPARATELY, ELSEWHERE. Clingfishes and lumpsuckers on British shores have sucker discs too, evolved independently, and for the same reason. Where the water moves that hard, holding on is worth building for — which is a more interesting fact about a rock pool than anything in it is worth catching.
