The Rügen Bodden

Bay · Brackish water · in Germany

A complex of shallow, sheltered, partly enclosed brackish lagoons behind the island of Rügen, with reed margins, weed beds, soft bottom and salinity low enough for freshwater fish to live and spawn.

Safety: cold water shock — can cause serious injury or death. 2 more points apply here.

What each one does, and what reduces it ↓

FishingHQ describes what this place is, not whether you may fish it. Access, permits and who to ask.

Northern pike · European perch · Zander · Brown trout

Recorded here, but not a species to target

These are recorded here, but they are not fish to take. Each is either assessed as Critically Endangered or protected by statute in this jurisdiction, and taking one may be prohibited outright — elsewhere every rod-caught fish must be returned. Read the species page and check the current rules with the authority before fishing.

How people fish it

Practised here: Predator fishing, Lure fishing, Fly fishing.

Methods the sources name for this ground. Each one is explained in full on its own page.

  • Spinning

Casting an artificial lure and retrieving it so that it moves like something alive — the most direct form of lure fishing.

  • Drop shotting

A finesse rig with the weight below the hook, letting a small soft plastic be worked in place, off the bottom, without moving anywhere.

  • Deadbaiting

Presenting a dead fish as bait for predators — a method that works because scavenging is normal predator behaviour, not an exception.

The ground and the water

The ground
A complex of shallow, sheltered, partly enclosed brackish lagoons behind the island of Rügen, with reed margins, weed beds, soft bottom and salinity low enough for freshwater fish to live and spawn.
Exposure
Sheltered by the island from the open Baltic, with wind rather than sea the limiting factor.
Depth
Very shallow throughout — much of it only a few metres — which is why it warms early and holds the weed the pike fishery depends on.

Through the year

The pike fishery is organised around the pre-spawning and post-spawning periods in the shallow water; the fish are in what is nominally the sea and behave as freshwater pike.

Safety

Cold water shock — Can cause serious injury or death

Northern European water is cold enough for most of the year to trigger the involuntary gasp and the loss of swimming ability that decides most immersion deaths, and it does so within the first minute, long before hypothermia is relevant.

What reduces it: Wear a buoyancy aid rather than carry one, carry a means of calling for help on the person rather than in a bag, and plan on the assumption that an unplanned entry into the water is survivable only if somebody knows immediately.

Drowning and immersion — Can cause serious injury or death

Ice thickness varies invisibly across a single water — thinner over current, over springs, near inflows and outflows, along reed edges and around anything that conducts heat — and spring ice loses strength while keeping its thickness, so a measurement stops meaning what it did. Somebody who goes through is in cold water under a lid.

What reduces it: Carry ice picks worn on the person and reachable with either hand, carry a throw line, never go out alone, test as you go rather than only at the edge, and treat local knowledge of that particular water as the primary source rather than a general rule about thickness.

Worse when:

  • In early winter and in spring, when the ice looks the same as mid-winter ice and does not behave like it.
  • After any period of thaw, however brief.

Tides and being cut off — Can cause serious injury or death

On the Wadden flats a small vertical rise in the tide is an enormous horizontal advance, and the water fills the creeks first and spreads backward, so it appears between a person and the dyke while the ground under them is still dry.

What reduces it: Do not go out onto the flats unaccompanied — guided crossing exists on that coast because local judgement is that it cannot be done safely alone. Set a leaving time from the tide, and treat water appearing behind you as the signal to go immediately.

Worse when:

  • In fog, which is frequent and removes the only navigation a featureless flat offers.

Rules and access

FishingHQ does not know the current access position here, and Germany's structure surprises visitors more than most. In most of the country a fishing licence is issued only after a formal examination in fish biology, law and welfare — the qualification comes before the paper — and the arrangements for the Baltic and North Sea coasts differ between the coastal states. Species measures, closed seasons and protected areas apply and change. Check the current position with the fisheries authority of the state before going. This water is tidal and transitional, so the freshwater regime may also apply above the tidal limit: FishingHQ does not know the current access position here. German inland angling needs two separate things: the state fishing licence, which in most states follows an examination, and a permit for the specific water, which is sold by whoever holds the fishing right — usually a club, a commune or a private owner. Neither substitutes for the other, both differ between the sixteen states, and both change. Check with the state fisheries authority and with the water's rights-holder before going.

Particular to this water: This ground lies in or beside a marine protected area whose zoning constrains fishing, diving, anchoring and collection independently of any licence, with rules that differ between zones and boundaries that are not visible from the water.

Who holds the answer:

  • The fisheries authority of the federal state whose coast this is, for the licence, the coastal arrangements and the measures on them.
  • The port or municipal authority, for access to structures.
  • The fisheries authority of the federal state, for the licence and the examination behind it.
  • The angling club, commune or private owner that holds the fishing right on the water and sells the permit for it.
  • The fisheries authority of the federal state, which sets the licence, the examination behind it and any visitor arrangement.
  • The angling club, commune or private owner holding the fishing right on the water, which issues the water permit and sets its conditions.
  • The national park or protected-area administration on the Wadden coast, whose zoning constrains access independently of fishing rules.
  • The waterways and shipping administration, for access to engineered river banks, groynes, locks and their surroundings.
  • The veterinary and animal-welfare authority of the state, which is the body behind the welfare provisions of the framework.
