The mouth carries sharp teeth and the fish is powerful and persistent out of water, thrashing long after landing.

What reduces it: Never place fingers in the mouth. Use long pliers, control the body firmly, and keep the fish contained.

Look at this first

Read the pattern rather than the shape. All snakeheads have the long body, the long-based fins and the flattened plated head; a northern snakehead is the one covered in irregular dark blotches over tan, rather than the clean stripes or bands its relatives carry.

Diagnostic — settles it on its own

Each of these settles the identification on its own. If one is clear, you have your answer.

  • Irregular dark blotching over a tan flank

    The flank carries scattered, irregularly shaped dark marks with soft edges, arranged in no regular sequence. A giant snakehead carries two clean longitudinal bands; a striped snakehead carries chevron barring. Judge the ORGANISATION of the marks rather than their colour, which varies with the water the fish came from.

  • Very long-based dorsal and anal fins with a rounded tail

    The dorsal runs most of the length of the back and the anal most of the length of the belly, with a rounded rather than forked tail behind them. Bowfin, the North American fish most often confused with it, has a long dorsal but a short anal fin and a bony gular plate under the chin.

Supporting — use with other characters

Real characters that are not conclusive by themselves. Use two or three together.

  • Flattened head with large plate-like scales

    The top of the head is broad and flat and covered with enlarged scales that look like plates, with the eyes set well forward, close to the snout. It is the character that gives the family its name and it identifies a snakehead before you attempt the species.

  • Large mouth with a projecting lower jaw

    The jaw extends past the upper and carries small sharp teeth. It is a predator's mouth, and combined with the flat head it gives the fish the snake-like look the name describes.

What it gets confused with

  • Bowfin, native to eastern North America and repeatedly killed in mistake for a snakehead — bowfin has a SHORT anal fin and a bony plate under the chin, and a snakehead has neither.
  • Burbot, also long-bodied with a long second dorsal, but carrying a chin barbel and a marbled rather than blotched pattern.
  • Other Channa species where ranges overlap in Asia, separated on the arrangement of the flank markings.

Where this stops working

The most consequential error with this species runs in the opposite direction from the usual one: in eastern North America, native bowfin are routinely killed by anglers who believe they have caught a snakehead. Bowfin's short anal fin and gular plate settle it, and if the fish is a bowfin it is a native species that should be released. Where northern snakehead IS established it is invasive and destructive, and reporting requirements, retention requirements and prohibitions on moving live fish vary between jurisdictions — verify with the responsible authority rather than acting on what you have read about a different state or country. Never transport a live snakehead anywhere. The fish survives out of water for a long time, which is precisely why moving one is so damaging.
