Chum salmon vs Sockeye salmon

How to tell them apart, and what follows from getting it right.

Why they get confused

This is the hardest pair in the genus for a fish straight off the tide, because both are essentially unspotted. Everybody knows the spawning states — a scarlet sockeye with a green head is unmistakable, and so is a barred chum with dog teeth — and neither helps at the moment of capture in salt water, when both are plain bright silver fish of overlapping size in overlapping runs.

Each difference is marked with how far it can be trusted on its own. A single diagnostic character settles the identification; suggestive ones only narrow it.

Why it matters

Sockeye is the most economically and culturally significant salmon of many North Pacific systems and its fisheries are managed to escapement targets with openings that can change within a day. Chum is managed separately and in several systems more liberally. A misidentified fish in a mixed fishery is a retention decision made against the wrong rule. There is also a table consequence that runs the opposite way to the difficulty: a sea-bright chum is a good fish, and a chum that has coloured up in the river is markedly poorer than a sockeye at the same stage — so the identification becomes easy at exactly the point where the answer stops being worth acting on.
