Chum salmon vs Pink salmon

How to tell them apart, and what follows from getting it right.

Why they get confused

Both run in autumn, both are the smaller Pacific salmon, and in the river they are separated at a glance by the pink's hump. The problem is in salt water and in the first hours of fresh, where both are bright silver fish of similar build and the spawning characters everybody knows have not developed yet. The two also hybridise where they overlap, and the hybrids are fertile, so an intermediate fish is a genuine possibility.

Pink salmon

Each difference is marked with how far it can be trusted on its own. A single diagnostic character settles the identification; suggestive ones only narrow it.

Why it matters

Pacific salmon fisheries are managed species by species, with separate openings, separate bag limits and in many places separate retention rules for hatchery and wild fish, so the identification is what the licence condition actually means. Pink salmon also runs in strict alternate-year cycles in much of its range, which means that in the off year a river holds effectively none and a lone silver fish is likelier to be something else. And pink salmon has established outside its native range in northern Europe, where it is treated as invasive and reporting may be required — verify with the responsible authority rather than assuming the rules of one coast apply to another.
