What is known about how it feeds

The John Dory is almost entirely piscivorous, and its whole body is a solution to one problem: how does a fish with no speed catch fish that have some.

The answer is geometry rather than power. The dory is compressed almost to the thickness of a plate, and it approaches prey HEAD-ON, along the axis where that thinness makes it very nearly invisible — a vertical line with two eyes. It closes slowly, propelled by delicate undulations of the dorsal and anal fins rather than by the tail, which avoids the pressure wave a tail beat would send ahead of it. At a range of centimetres the jaws, which are enormously protrusible, shoot forward into a tube and the sudden expansion of the mouth cavity draws water and prey in together.

The strike takes a fraction of a second and requires no swimming speed at all, because the mouth travels rather than the fish.

Two verified species-level relationships record the prey this apparatus is aimed at: sandeels and sprats, both small shoaling fish that gather around the structure dories hunt over. Small herring, pouting, gobies and juveniles of many species make up the rest, along with some cephalopods and crustaceans taken opportunistically.

Vision is dominant and is the sense the whole method depends on. The fish must see the prey clearly and judge the closing distance precisely, and the large eyes are set high on a head built for a forward-facing approach. That is why John Dory are fish of reasonably clear water over structure and are never estuary fish: in opaque water the method simply does not work.

The solitary habit follows too. An ambush this delicate gains nothing from company, and a second dory nearby is both a competitor for the same approach and a warning to the same prey.

The food

What the catalogue holds a verified dietary relationship for. Each entry carries its own evidence, and each is recorded at the granularity the source actually used: a named species where the source named one, a taxon or food category where it said “polychaetes”, “crustaceans” or “detritus” and meant it. What anglers do with this

Almost nobody sets out to catch a John Dory, and the small body of practice that exists is drawn straight from the feeding mechanism.

SMALL LIVEBAITS NEAR STRUCTURE are the one genuinely deliberate approach, and the argument is that a small live fish held near the structure dories hunt over is precisely what the animal is stalking. It is coherent, it is widely repeated, and it is convention rather than a tested finding.

SLOWLY WORKED LURES take dories too, and the emphasis on SLOWLY is the interpretation that matters. A fish that stalks rather than chases is not going to run down a fast retrieve, and practitioners consistently report that dories follow and take without hurry. Fast retrieves are held to be wasted on them.

SCENT IS BESIDE THE POINT, which is inference from the visual profile rather than an established fact, but it is well grounded: an animal that hunts by seeing and judging range is not being brought in by a bait leaking.

CLEAR WATER OVER STRUCTURE is where the fishing happens, for the same reason the fish lives there.

One thing on this page is not interpretation. The global Red List assessment for this species is Data Deficient: it is taken as bycatch across mixed demersal fisheries throughout its range and there is no global stock assessment behind it. That is a record of how little is known and should not be read as reassurance.

What this does not establish

Both relationships are species-level and both rest on a piscivorous diet described in general terms together with the co-occurrence of predator and prey; neither establishes that sandeels or sprats are dominant prey items, only that small shoaling fish of this kind are taken. Nothing here establishes proportions, seasonal variation, or how the diet changes with the size of the individual — which for a fish whose method depends on mouth size is likely to be substantial. The account of the strike mechanism is well established for the family; the specific inference that the head-on approach functions as camouflage is the standard reading rather than a measured one.
