What is known about how it feeds
A bluefin tuna is warm in cold water, and that fact organises its entire feeding ecology.
Counter-current heat exchangers allow the fish to keep its muscle, viscera and brain above ambient temperature, which permits sustained high-speed swimming in water far colder than any other bony fish of comparable activity could tolerate. The consequence is a predator that can operate from the Mediterranean to Norwegian and Canadian waters within a single year, and can hunt at depth as well as at the surface.
The three verified relationships map onto that range. Herring for the northern feeding grounds, anchovy for the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, and cephalopods — recorded at group level — for the deeper and nocturnal part of the diet, taken when squid rise through the water column.
The energetic demand is enormous and it is the reason for everything else. A bluefin must find dense concentrations of high-energy prey repeatedly, which is why the species migrates on the scale it does and why its distribution tracks forage fish rather than temperature alone.
Ontogenetically the diet broadens rather than shifts: small bluefin take crustaceans and small fish, and large ones add larger fish and cephalopods without abandoning what they ate before.
The stock history is part of the biology now. Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin were severely depleted and have recovered substantially under management, and the fishery is regulated accordingly wherever it exists.

Bluefin fishing is bait-finding at ocean scale, and the practical reasoning follows the biology exactly: locate the forage concentration and the tuna are with it. That is convention held across every bluefin fishery.
The deep and nocturnal cephalopod component explains why fish that are absent from the surface are frequently present below it, and anglers use that to explain blank days on marks that are demonstrably holding fish.
Everything else about angling for this species is governed by regulation rather than by biology. Access is licensed, retention is controlled, and in several fisheries the activity exists only as a permitted catch-and-release or tagging programme. What applies is a question for the relevant authority and it changes annually.
The handling consequence of the warm-bodied physiology is not interpretation: a bluefin generates a great deal of heat during a long fight, and a fish intended for release needs the fight kept as short as the tackle allows.
What this does not establish
Three relationships describe a very broad opportunistic diet across an ocean-scale range, and the cephalopod relationship is group-level. Composition differs completely between the Mediterranean, the eastern Atlantic and the western Atlantic, and between size classes. Nothing here establishes proportions.
