Crabbing happens on quaysides, harbour walls, steps and rocks, usually while looking down into the water, frequently with children, and often on wet weed-covered stone. The animal is harmless; the edge is the hazard, and the attention is on the line rather than on the feet.

What reduces it: Choose a spot with a rail, a set-back edge or a wide ledge rather than the most productive corner. Keep children away from the edge and within reach. Footwear with grip, and no leaning out to reach a dropped line — let it go.

Harbour walls are vertical, the water beside them is deep, there is frequently no ladder within reach and the water is cold enough for cold water shock in any season. A child who goes in off a quay is in serious difficulty immediately, and an adult who goes in after them is a second casualty.

What reduces it: Know where the nearest ladder and throw line are before starting. Buoyancy aids for children on open quaysides are a proportionate precaution and are normal in many harbours. Do not enter the water to retrieve anybody — use the throw line or the ladder and call for help. Where a harbour posts its own safety guidance, follow it.

Rock-pool and low-water crabbing takes people onto ground the flood covers, and the flood can fill a gully behind somebody who is concentrating on a pool with a child.

The commonest harm in recreational crabbing is not to people. Buckets crowded with crabs in warm shallow water deoxygenate quickly and the animals fight; a bucket left in the sun for an afternoon kills most of what is in it. Current scientific review finds the evidence for sentience in decapod crustaceans strong enough to warrant precaution in handling.

What reduces it: Keep few animals, in cool water, in shade, changed regularly, and for a short time. Return them properly and promptly. Treat a bucket as somewhere to look at a crab for a minute rather than somewhere to accumulate them for an afternoon.

Outside its native range the shore crab is among the most damaging marine invasive species recorded, restructuring shellfish communities and damaging commercial fisheries. Movement of live animals — in bait buckets, in gear, in water — is a mechanism by which it spreads.

What reduces it: Never move a live crab, or the water it is in, between waters. Return animals where they were caught. Where the species is non-native, follow the responsible authority's requirements for captured animals, which in several regions prohibit returning them alive.

Precautions that always apply here

  • Check the tide before you go and know your exit route. Being cut off is the commonest way a shore session becomes a rescue.
  • Tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to be back.
  • Never move live fish, live bait or water from one water to another.
  • Check, clean and dry your kit between different waters — the published guidance is 48 hours’ drying, in sunlight where possible, because a number of invasive species survive over two weeks in damp conditions. Nets, boots and wet mats move invasive species and disease more effectively than anything else anglers do.

The shore crab is the commonest crab of the north-east Atlantic shore and the animal behind almost all recreational crabbing. It lives everywhere there is hard cover between the tides and a little below: under weed, in harbour walls, among boulders, in estuaries a long way up into brackish water, and in almost any pool with something to hide beneath.

For most people it is the first wild animal they ever deliberately catch. A line with a weight and a piece of bait, dropped off a harbour wall into three feet of water, will bring one up within a minute, and the whole of the technique is to lift slowly enough that the crab does not let go. That is not a trivial fishery to describe: it is how a very large number of people first find out that the sea has things in it.

IT IS NOT AN EATING CRAB IN ANY PRACTICAL SENSE. A shore crab is small, mostly shell, and yields almost nothing. In parts of Europe soft-shelled individuals are a traditional delicacy and there are established fisheries for them, but the animal a child pulls off a quay is not a meal and the honest answer to a child's question is that we look at it and put it back.

IT IS ALSO A MAJOR BAIT ANIMAL, which is why this catalogue already held it — as `peeler-crab`, the same species in the act of moulting, when it is soft and enormously attractive to bass, cod and smoothhound. That is a different record about the same animal at one moment of its life.

AND OUTSIDE ITS NATIVE RANGE IT IS A SERIOUS PEST. Introduced populations on the Pacific coast of North America, in South Africa, in Australia, in Argentina and in Japan have restructured shellfish communities and damaged commercial fisheries. A reader in Britain is looking at a native; a reader in Washington State or Tasmania is looking at something managed as an invader, and in several of those places there are organised removal programmes and specific rules about what may be done with a captured animal.

  • Five sharp teeth along the edge of the carapace on each side of the eyes, and three rounded lobes between them — the arrangement is the standard field character and it holds at every size.

Exceptional: Carapace widths around 9 to 10 cm are recorded for large males in the scientific literature, and animals in introduced populations sometimes exceed the sizes typical of the native range.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Grows by moulting, discarding the whole shell and expanding rapidly before the new one hardens. Moults are frequent in young animals and less so with age. Most animals live three to five years. The moult is the whole basis of the peeler-crab bait fishery and it is also the period when the animal is most vulnerable, which is why a soft crab hides and why the hard males carry soft females around before mating.

Mating occurs when the female is soft immediately after moulting, and the male carries her beforehand in the posture anglers call a carry or a doublet. The female then carries fertilised eggs as an orange or brown mass beneath the folded tail flap for months before releasing planktonic larvae. Berried females are common in the catch and should simply be returned where the species is native.

Feeding and senses

An aggressive omnivorous predator and scavenger taking molluscs, worms, small crustaceans, carrion and algae. It opens small bivalves by chipping and crushing the shell edge, and that capability is exactly what makes introduced populations so destructive to clam, mussel and oyster beds.

Chemoreception dominates: a shore crab finds bait by scent carried on the tide, which is why a baited line works at all and why an oily bait outfishes a bland one. The stalked compound eyes detect movement and shadow well and resolve detail poorly, so a shadow cast across a pool empties it while a slowly lifted line does not.

Through the year

Most active and most catchable through the warmer months, moving into the intertidal on the flood and retreating with the ebb. In winter animals move to deeper water and become far less active. Moulting peaks in the warmer months, which is when peeler crabs are gathered for bait, and the moult cycle rather than the calendar is what a bait gatherer is actually tracking.

Distribution

Native to the north-east Atlantic from Norway and Iceland south to Mauritania, including all of Britain and Ireland, and into the Baltic and the Mediterranean. Introduced and established on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America, in South Africa, in Australia, in Argentina, in Japan and elsewhere, where it is treated as a significant invasive species. Found from the high intertidal to around sixty metres, and far up estuaries into water that is barely brackish.

Why anglers care

The animal behind recreational crabbing, which for a very large number of people is the first fishing they ever do, and the source of peeler crab — among the most effective baits there is for bass, cod, smoothhound and flatfish. It is not a food crab in any meaningful sense at the size caught on a line, and a page that implied otherwise would be setting a child up for disappointment and a dead animal.

Handling and returning

Shore crabs are harmless. The claws of a large one can pinch hard enough to hurt and not hard enough to injure, and the way to avoid it is to hold the animal across the back of the carapace between finger and thumb, behind the claws, where it cannot reach.

RETURNING THEM IS THE NORMAL OUTCOME AND IT NEEDS DOING PROPERLY. A bucket of crabs in warm shallow water deoxygenates and heats within minutes, and crabs in a crowded bucket attack each other. Keep few animals, keep the water cool, change it, keep it in shade, and return them promptly — lowered into the water beside the wall rather than dropped from height, and where possible into weed or cover rather than open water, because a crab dropped in the open is taken at once.

SOFT AND BERRIED ANIMALS DESERVE PARTICULAR CARE. A crab that has just moulted has no protection at all and a berried female is carrying the next generation; both should go straight back with minimal handling.

WHERE THE SPECIES IS NON-NATIVE, the handling rule is different and is set by the local authority — several regions run organised removal programmes and prohibit returning live animals to the water. That is a local rule and it changes, so check with the responsible authority rather than assuming that what is right in Cornwall is right in Puget Sound.

Where any crab is to be eaten, the water it came from matters: shellfish-gathering waters are classified for sanitary quality in many jurisdictions, and harbours are frequently among the poorest. Gathering to eat from a harbour where children are crabbing is not the same activity as crabbing.

Where shore crabs live, and why they are everywhere

The shore crab occupies a wider range of conditions than almost any other coastal animal, and understanding the tolerance explains both why a child finds one under every rock and why the species is so destructive where it has been introduced.

THE FIRST TOLERANCE IS SALINITY. Shore crabs live in full-strength sea water, in estuaries, and far up into water that is barely brackish. Very few marine invertebrates manage that range, and it means a single species occupies the open coast, the harbour, the estuary and the creek — habitats that would normally be divided between several animals.

THE SECOND IS TEMPERATURE. The native range runs from Norway and Iceland to Mauritania, which is an enormous thermal span, and introduced populations have established across a similar range on other coasts. An animal that tolerates that does not need a narrow window.

THE THIRD IS SUBSTRATE. Rock, boulder, weed, mud, sand, shingle, harbour wall, pontoon, pier piling — the crab uses all of them. It shelters under and among structure, buries in soft ground, and works whatever is available.

AND THE FOURTH IS EXPOSURE. It occupies the high intertidal, which dries out twice a day, down to around sixty metres. Animals move up the shore on the flood to feed and retreat on the ebb, sheltering under weed and rock through the exposure, which is why turning a stone at low water finds them.

PUT THOSE FOUR TOGETHER and the result is an animal with almost no habitat constraint at all in temperate coastal water — which is exactly the profile of a successful invader. Where the species has been carried outside its native range, on ballast, on hulls and with shipments of shellfish, it has established on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America, in South Africa, Australia, Argentina and Japan, and it is treated as a significant invasive species in most of them.

WHAT IT DOES THERE IS THE PROBLEM. A generalist predator that opens small bivalves by chipping and crushing the shell edge, arriving in a system whose clams, mussels and oysters have no history with it, changes the shellfish community rather than joining it. Handling shore crabs: a bucket is the hazard, not the claws

Almost everybody's first question about a shore crab is whether it can hurt them. It cannot, meaningfully — and the animal is nevertheless the one in this catalogue most likely to die from being caught, for reasons nobody watching a child on a quayside would guess.

THE CLAW IS A NON-ISSUE, HANDLED CORRECTLY. A large shore crab can pinch hard enough to hurt and not hard enough to injure. Held across the back of the carapace between finger and thumb, behind the claws, it cannot reach, and that grip is the whole technique.

THE BUCKET IS WHERE THE DEATHS HAPPEN. A container of shallow water in summer sun deoxygenates and heats within minutes — a small volume has almost no thermal inertia and almost no dissolved oxygen reserve — and crabs in a crowded bucket attack each other, because that is what an aggressive omnivorous scavenger does with a confined competitor. A morning's crabbing that ends with a bucket tipped back into the water frequently returns dead and damaged animals, and nobody involved intended it.

WHICH GIVES THE SPECIFIC PRACTICE. Keep few animals rather than many. Keep the water cool, change it, and keep the bucket in shade. Return them promptly rather than at the end of the session. And lower them into the water beside the wall rather than dropping them from height — a crab dropped from a quayside into open water is taken immediately by whatever is beneath, and a crab that lands hard on a hard bottom is injured.

TWO CATEGORIES DESERVE MORE CARE THAN THE REST. An animal that has just moulted is soft-shelled and has no protection whatever; a berried female carrying an egg mass under the tail flap is carrying the next generation. Both should go straight back, handled as little as possible.

THE WELFARE POINT IS NOT SENTIMENTAL. Decapod crustaceans are now formally recognised in several jurisdictions as capable of experiencing pain, on the strength of a substantial evidence review, and that recognition is what changed the legal position in some places. Whether or not it changes anybody's mind, the practical measures it implies are the same ones that keep the crabs alive.

AND THE FOOD QUESTION IS SEPARATE. Where any crab is to be eaten, the water it came from is the operative fact: shellfish-gathering waters are classified for sanitary quality and harbours are frequently among the poorest. Gathering to eat from a harbour where children are crabbing is a different activity with a different framework.

How big shore crabs get, and why the introduced ones are bigger

Size in a crab is measured across the carapace rather than along the animal, and the numbers are worth knowing because the species behaves differently at different sizes and because the figures do not transfer between coasts.

MOST ANIMALS CAUGHT ON A LINE ARE THREE TO SIX CENTIMETRES ACROSS. That is an ordinary shore crab: a couple of years old, active in the intertidal, and the size a baited line from a quayside catches.

OVER SEVEN CENTIMETRES IS A LARGE ONE, and carapace widths approaching nine or ten centimetres are recorded for large males in the scientific literature. Males grow larger than females, which is a general pattern in the group and is related to the energetic cost of carrying eggs.

GROWTH IS BY MOULTING RATHER THAN BY ACCUMULATION, which is the thing that makes crab size different from fish size. A crustacean's shell does not grow; the animal periodically sheds it and expands before the new one hardens. So size increases in steps rather than continuously, growth rate is really moult frequency, and both slow markedly as the animal gets larger. A big shore crab has moulted a great many times and is genuinely old.

AND THE MOULT IS WHY PEELER CRABS EXIST AS A BAIT. An animal about to shed is called a peeler and one that has just shed is a softie, and both are among the most effective sea baits available precisely because a soft crab is defenceless and every predator on the shore knows it. A bait gatherer tracking peelers is tracking the moult cycle rather than the calendar, which is why the peeler season is a temperature and not a date.

THE INTERESTING SIZE FINDING IS FROM THE INVADED RANGE. Animals in introduced populations sometimes exceed the sizes typical of the native range — a pattern seen in several successful invaders and usually attributed to release from native parasites, predators and competitors. That is a genuinely useful thing to know, because it means a size figure from a British shore is not a description of what the same species does on a coast where it does not belong.

Shore crabs through the year: the moult is the calendar

A shore crab's year is organised by two cycles that have nothing to do with each other — the tide, which runs twice a day, and the moult, which runs across the warm months — and an angler or a bait gatherer is tracking one or the other rather than the calendar.

THE DAILY CYCLE IS THE TIDE. Crabs move up the shore on the flood to feed over ground that was dry, and retreat on the ebb, sheltering under weed, rock and structure through the exposure. That is why a baited line works on a rising tide, why turning a stone at low water finds animals sitting it out, and why the productive period at any given spot is a state of tide rather than a time of day.

THE ANNUAL CYCLE IS TEMPERATURE. Crabs are most active and most catchable through the warmer months. In winter they move to deeper water and their activity falls substantially — a metabolic response rather than a migration in any meaningful sense — which is why a harbour that swarms in August produces almost nothing in January.

AND THE MOULT CYCLE IS THE ONE THAT MATTERS TO A BAIT GATHERER. Moulting peaks in the warmer months, and the animals about to shed — peelers — are the most sought-after sea bait in Britain. The gatherer is looking for a specific physiological state rather than a species, and the state is read from the shell: a peeler's old carapace lifts away from the new one beneath, and the leg segments separate cleanly under gentle pressure.

SO THE 'PEELER SEASON' IS A WATER TEMPERATURE. It arrives earlier in a warm spring and in a sheltered estuary than on an exposed coast, it varies year to year, and anybody who has learned it as a set of dates will be wrong regularly. Crabs also shelter to moult, which is why gatherers work weed, rock and structure rather than open ground, and why leaving that structure as it was found matters — a boulder left upside down destroys the shelter the next moult depends on.

BREEDING FITS INTO THE SAME CYCLE. Mating happens when the female is soft immediately after moulting, so the male carries her beforehand in the posture gatherers call a doublet, and berried females carrying an egg mass under the tail flap are common in the catch through parts of the year. Where the species is native, they simply go back.

How shore crabs reproduce, and what a doublet actually is

Crab reproduction is constrained by the same fact that constrains crab growth: the animal wears its skeleton on the outside, and almost everything interesting happens in the brief window when that skeleton is soft.

MATING REQUIRES A SOFT FEMALE. A female shore crab can only be fertilised immediately after she has moulted, while the new shell is still pliable. That window is short, it is unpredictable from outside, and it is the single most competitive moment in the animal's life.

WHICH IS WHY THE MALE CARRIES HER BEFOREHAND. A male finds a female approaching her moult and holds her beneath him, walking and feeding while carrying her, for days — the posture bait gatherers and crabbers call a carry or a doublet. He is not attacking her and she is not being trapped in any useful sense; he is guarding access to a window that is about to open, against every other male on the shore.

AFTER FERTILISATION SHE CARRIES THE EGGS. A fertilised female becomes berried: an orange or brown egg mass held under the folded tail flap, aerated by her, carried for months. That is a substantial energetic commitment and it is why females stay smaller than males.

THE LARVAE THEN GO INTO THE PLANKTON. Released as free-swimming larvae, they drift, pass through several stages, and eventually settle out onto the shore as tiny crabs. That planktonic phase is what gives the species its dispersal, and it is a large part of why an introduced population spreads along a coast so effectively once established: the adults do not have to travel for the species to.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR SOMEBODY WHO HAS JUST CAUGHT ONE. A doublet is two live animals, one of them about to be defenceless, and separating them serves no purpose — return them together. A berried female is carrying a season's reproduction and should go straight back with minimal handling. A soft-shelled animal has no protection at all.

AND WHERE THE SPECIES IS NOT NATIVE THE OPPOSITE INSTRUCTION MAY APPLY, because the same reproductive success that makes it abundant at home makes it destructive elsewhere.
