The mouth carries many small sharp teeth and the jaws are strong; a bowfin thrashes hard and for a long time after landing.
What reduces it: Never place fingers in the mouth. Use long pliers, control the body against a firm surface, and keep clear of the head.
Bowfin is the sole surviving member of an otherwise extinct lineage, and it looks it: a heavy cylindrical body, a long undulating dorsal fin running most of the back, a bony plate between the lower jaws, and a rounded tail that in males carries a black eyespot ringed with orange.
Its most useful trick is a vascularised swim bladder that functions as a lung. Bowfin gulp air at the surface and can survive in stagnant, warm, oxygen-depleted backwaters that exclude almost every other predator — which is precisely where they thrive.
Anglers have historically treated them as trash fish and often killed them on sight. That attitude has shifted: bowfin are native, they are not the cause of the problems attributed to them, and they fight extremely hard.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Moderately long-lived, with males maturing earlier and remaining smaller than females. Populations are resilient and persist in habitat that will not support other large predators.
The male builds and guards a nest in shallow vegetation in spring, then guards the hatched young as a dense swarming ball for several weeks — parental care unusual in its thoroughness among freshwater fish of the region.
Feeding and senses
An opportunistic ambush predator taking fish, crayfish and amphibians. Feeds heavily in low light and can hunt effectively in water too poor in oxygen for its prey to escape efficiently.
Hunts in turbid, low-oxygen and low-light water using smell and lateral-line detection as much as sight, which is why it succeeds in habitat where visual predators fail.
Through the year
Spawns in spring, feeds heavily through summer in warm shallow backwaters, and remains active in cold water. Its air-breathing ability lets it stay in habitat that becomes hypoxic in summer.

Why anglers care
An increasingly deliberately targeted native species, taken on cut bait, large soft plastics and fly, particularly in southern backwaters and oxbows. Its significance has changed: long dismissed and often killed, it is now valued for the strength of its fight and recognised as a native predator rather than a nuisance. Practitioner consensus among anglers who target it holds that hook-setting is difficult because of the hard bony mouth.
Handling and returning
The jaws are lined with sharp teeth and the fish is exceptionally strong and durable out of water, thrashing long after most fish would tire. Use pliers, avoid the mouth entirely, and control the body firmly. Being air-breathing it survives poor handling better than most species, which is not a reason to handle it poorly.

Bowfin are handled badly because they are frequently caught by accident, are regarded as a nuisance in places, and are considerably better armed than they look.
THE MOUTH IS THE HAZARD. A bony jaw with sharp conical teeth and a strong, fast closure, on a fish that is aggressive when held and that will bite deliberately rather than incidentally. A bowfin's bite draws blood readily and the fish does not release quickly.
SO CONTROL THE HEAD BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE. Grip behind the head with a gloved hand or a wet cloth, keep the body supported, and use long pliers. Never lip a bowfin.
THE SLIME IS EXCEPTIONAL, and it matters practically: bowfin are extraordinarily difficult to hold, so people grip harder and closer to the head, which is exactly where the mouth is. A wet towel is the tool that solves this.
THE FISH IS EXTREMELY HARDY. Bowfin are air-breathers with a vascularised gas bladder and survive out of water and in poor conditions far better than most freshwater fish. Release survival is high.
AND THE ATTITUDE PROBLEM IS WORTH NAMING. Bowfin are native, ancient, ecologically legitimate predators frequently killed as trash fish on the assumption they damage a fishery. They are not an introduced species and there is no good basis for that treatment. Where local rules do not require otherwise, a bowfin should be returned like anything else.

Air-breathing in water nothing else survives, and a lineage older than the habitat
Bowfin occupy habitat that is defined less by what it contains than by what it excludes, and the animal's ancient physiology is what lets it exploit that.
THE HABITAT IS WARM, SHALLOW, VEGETATED AND OXYGEN-POOR. Backwaters, oxbows, swamps, sloughs, weedy lake margins and slow river reaches — water that is heavily vegetated, often stagnant, warm in summer, and where dissolved oxygen falls to levels that kill most fish. This is not marginal habitat for a bowfin; it is the core of the niche.
AND THE REASON IT WORKS IS A LUNG. Bowfin possess a vascularised gas bladder that functions as a lung, and they gulp atmospheric air at the surface to supplement gill respiration. In water with almost no dissolved oxygen, a bowfin simply breathes air. That single capability converts water that would be lethal into water with no competitors and no predators in it, and it is why the animal is found where it is.
THE VEGETATION IS THE SECOND HALF. Bowfin are ambush predators using dense weed and submerged timber for concealment, taking fish, crayfish and amphibians from cover — the same ambush-plus-edge logic that governs pike, applied in a habitat a pike could not tolerate.
THE ANIMAL IS ALSO A GENUINE RELICT and it is worth one line because it explains the physiology. Bowfin are the sole surviving member of an order that was widespread and diverse in the Mesozoic, and features that look like curiosities — the gas bladder lung, the bony gular plate under the jaw, the heterocercal tail, the robust ganoid-influenced scales — are retained ancestral characters rather than adaptations acquired recently. The fish has occupied this kind of water for a very long time.
WHICH GIVES A USEFUL GENERAL POINT. Warm, stagnant, weedy backwater looks like poor habitat and supports a specific and ancient community — bowfin, gars, some catfishes, snakeheads elsewhere — built around air-breathing. Draining and channelising those systems removes an entire assemblage that has no alternative habitat, and it does so from water most people regard as worthless.
