Chinook salmon vs Sockeye salmon
How to tell them apart, and what follows from getting it right.
Why they get confused
Two Pacific salmon running the same rivers at overlapping times, both bright silver at sea, both turning dark and red-toned on the spawning grounds. Anglers meeting Pacific salmon for the first time frequently sort them by size and by how red they are, and both of those fail: a small chinook and a large sockeye overlap, and both species colour up. The reliable separations are the presence or absence of spotting and a feature inside the gill cover that most people never think to look at.

Each difference is marked with how far it can be trusted on its own. A single diagnostic character settles the identification; suggestive ones only narrow it.

Why it matters
Pacific salmon fisheries are managed species by species and stock by stock, with openings and closures adjusted in-season on the basis of actual returns. It is entirely normal for one species to be open and another closed on the same river on the same day, and for the rules to change between weeks. Sockeye in particular are managed on escapement counts to individual lake systems. Misidentifying the fish in your hands is therefore a straightforward compliance failure, and the gill rakers and the spotting settle it in seconds. What is open, where and when is a matter for the competent authority.
