The Japanese anchovy fills the same position in the north-west Pacific that the northern anchovy fills off California and the European anchovy fills in the Mediterranean: an abundant, short-lived, plankton-feeding shoaling fish that everything larger depends on.

It supports an extremely large commercial fishery and is deeply embedded in the food culture of the region, eaten at every life stage from the transparent larvae sold as shirasu to dried adults used for stock.

Ecologically it is the link between plankton production in the Kuroshio and Oyashio current systems and the predator community above it. Japanese sea bass, amberjack, mackerel and a long list of others feed on it, and anchovy abundance in the region varies on decadal cycles in a pattern comparable to the sardine-anchovy alternation seen in other upwelling systems.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Matures within the first year and lives two to three years at most. As with other anchovies, populations depend almost entirely on current recruitment and respond quickly to ocean conditions.

Spawns in batches across an extended season, chiefly in spring and autumn depending on latitude, releasing buoyant ellipsoidal eggs into coastal and shelf water.

Feeding and senses

A planktivore feeding on copepods and other small planktonic crustaceans, using both particulate feeding and filter feeding depending on prey density.

Vision for particulate feeding and lateral-line schooling. The species is strongly attracted to light at night, which is the basis of the commercial fishery that targets it.

Through the year

Migrates seasonally with water masses along the Japanese and Korean coasts, moving north with warming water and south again in autumn. Predator fisheries track the movements closely.

Distribution

The north-west Pacific around Japan, Korea, eastern China and Taiwan, and into the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea, in coastal and shelf waters.

Why anglers care

Not a rod-and-line target. Its significance to anglers is as the forage species around which the region's coastal predator fishing is organised, and as a bait fish supplied commercially.

Handling and returning

Very soft and quick to spoil, and handled by anglers only as commercially supplied bait rather than caught and kept alive. Frozen anchovy used as bait deteriorates rapidly once thawed and should not be refrozen.
