Hottentot
Fish · Last reviewed 2026-08-27
The Cape west coast's everyday fish: a dark, blunt-headed sparid of the kelp beds and harbour walls, caught in numbers on light tackle, and the species most South African anglers learn on.
Safety: cold water shock — can cause injury needing treatment.

Every fishing country has a fish that teaches people to fish. In the Western Cape it is the hottentot.
IT IS A KELP AND ROCK FISH OF THE COLD ATLANTIC SIDE. Where the bronze bream is the Eastern Cape's browsing sparid, this is the west's — from Angola south around to the west coast of South Africa, in the cold nutrient-rich Benguela water where kelp forest dominates the inshore. It is caught from harbour walls, from rock ledges, from kayaks and from small boats, and it is abundant.
IT IS A BROWSER LIKE ITS RELATIVE and takes the same approach: small hooks, light line, soft bait. Where it differs is in temperament — it is markedly less shy than the bronze bream and will feed hard in a shoal, which is why a good stance can produce fish steadily rather than occasionally.
THE BAG LIMIT REFLECTS THAT ABUNDANCE. Its daily bag limit is among the most generous in the whole regulation and several times what a bronze bream carries, with a modest minimum size, and both figures are a direct reflection of its abundance and its faster life history. It is one of very few South African linefish where the rules assume you will catch several.
IT IS ALSO THE FISH THAT MAKES THE COLD MATTER. The west-coast inshore is Benguela water — upwelled, cold, and capable of dropping to single figures in a summer south-easter. An angler standing on a Cape Peninsula rock in a wetsuit top in February is not being eccentric.
Where Hottentot is documented
Places where public sources describe this species as fished, with how it is fished and how strongly the evidence supports it. This is not a range map and it is not a recommendation — it is what has been written down about a fishery rather than a record of any individual catch, and being listed is never permission to fish.

What these strengths mean
- Characteristic of this water
- This water is strongly identified with this species by the sources that cover it.
- Established quarry
- Fishing sources describe this as a normal local target here, not merely as caught.
Identification
No photograph of Hottentot has passed identity review yet, so none is shown. FishingHQ publishes a species photograph only once somebody has confirmed the animal in it against the species record’s own diagnostic features.
- Scientific name
- Pachymetopon blochii
- Family
- Sparidae
- Water
- Saltwater
- Conservation status
- Least Concern
- Regions
- East & Southern Africa, West Africa
- A DARK BLUE-GREY TO BROWNISH OVAL FISH with a small head and a blunt profile — the west-coast counterpart of the bronze bream's shape.
- SMALLER THAN A BRONZE BREAM, reaching about 46 cm against the bronze bream's 65 cm.
- NO STRONG PATTERN AND NO BARS. A plain fish, which is itself a character on a coast full of striped and blotched sparids.
- INCISOR TEETH IN A ROW IN EACH JAW, the browsing dentition of the genus.
- RANGE IS THE FIRST ANSWER. This is the west-coast Pachymetopon and the bronze bream is the east-coast one; the two barely overlap.
Size
- Typical
- 22–35 cm; a legal minimum size applies.
- Large
- Over 40 cm is a good hottentot.
Exceptional: FishBase records a maximum of 46 cm and 1.7 kg. A fish at that size is exceptional rather than merely large.
How South African sea-fishing rules work
SOUTH AFRICA REGULATES SEA FISHING SPECIES BY SPECIES, WHICH IS NOT HOW MOST COUNTRIES DO IT.
A recreational permit is the entry ticket and not the whole of it. On top of it sits a minimum size and a daily bag limit SET PER FISH, a closed season on a small number of species, and a cumulative daily cap across everything caught — so being inside the limit for each species separately does not put you inside the limit overall.
THERE IS A CAP ON HOOKS on a rod-and-line permit. A spearfishing permit is separate, allows no breathing apparatus beyond a snorkel, and PROHIBITS SPEARFISHING IN AN ESTUARY — a flat ban rather than a limit, and the rule visitors most often do not know.
A LANDED FISH MUST KEEP ITS HEAD AND TAIL so its length can be checked. Nothing caught on a recreational permit may be sold by anyone. And a small list of species may not be caught, landed or possessed at all.
FISHINGHQ DOES NOT PRINT THE FIGURES, and the reason is on this page rather than in a policy document: the department's own guidance says adjustments may be forthcoming given the acknowledged crisis of linefish, the numbers differ by species and by area and by whether you were standing on a beach or sitting in a boat, and a stale figure on a fishing site is worse than no figure at all. Get the current position from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, and get the protected-area position from whichever body manages the stretch of coast you are on.

Lifecycle and reproduction
A comparatively fast-maturing and short-lived sparid by South African standards, which is why it can sustain a daily bag limit where its relatives carry limits of one or two. It is a shoaling fish associated with kelp and rocky ground through its life, without the estuarine juvenile phase that several of its neighbours depend on.
Spawns inshore over rocky and kelp-associated ground, with pelagic eggs and larvae, and does not undergo the sex change that characterises several of the larger South African sparids. The absence of that complication is part of why it holds up under pressure where slower relatives do not.
Feeding and senses
An omnivorous browser on algae, small invertebrates, worms and crustaceans taken from rock and kelp. It feeds in shoals and competitively, which is the practical difference from the bronze bream: where a bronze bream inspects, a shoal of hottentot competes, and a bait among several fish is taken with far less hesitation.
Close-range vision and taste in the clear cold water of the kelp inshore. Competitive shoal feeding reduces the individual caution that makes its eastern relative difficult, and that is a behavioural rather than a sensory difference.
Through the year
Present year-round on the same kelp and rock ground. The practical seasonality on the Cape west coast is the wind: a south-easterly summer brings hard upwelling and very cold, clear water, while winter north-westerlies bring swell that closes the ledges. The fish is available whenever a mark is.
Distribution
South-east Atlantic, from Angola south to the west coast of South Africa, in the cold nutrient-rich Benguela system. Associated with rocky ground and kelp forest from the shallow inshore down to moderate depth, and reaching harbour walls, breakwaters and rock ledges — which is why it is the most accessible sparid on that coast.
This is a biological range — where the species occurs, not a prediction that you will catch one. To browse the fishing geography FishingHQ holds, start at fishing places.
Why anglers care
The everyday shore and small-boat fish of the Cape west coast and the Cape Peninsula, and the species most Western Cape anglers first catch. It is a commercial species as well as a recreational one and carries an unusually generous recreational allowance — a daily bag limit at a minimum size — which is a direct reflection of its abundance and its faster life history. Assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern in 2009.
Handling and returning
An easy fish to handle well and an easy one to handle badly because there are usually several of them.
UNHOOK QUICKLY AND PUT IT IN THE WATER OR ON ICE. A fish left on hot rock while the next one is being caught is a fish that is neither released well nor kept well.
THE INCISORS ARE SHARP AND THE DORSAL SPINES ARE STIFF. Neither is dangerous, but grip the fish across the back rather than closing a hand round it.
WATCH THE CUMULATIVE CAP. Ten hottentot is the individual bag limit and is also the whole cumulative daily limit across every species; if you have ten hottentot you have finished for the day.
Safety
Cold water shock — Can cause injury needing treatment
The hottentot's ground is Benguela water on the Cape west coast, which is upwelled and genuinely cold — colder in a summer south-easter than in winter, and capable of single figures. An angler swept in from a Cape Peninsula ledge is in water cold enough to cause an immediate involuntary gasp and loss of breathing control, which is the mechanism that drowns people in the first minute.
What reduces it: Treat the west coast as cold water regardless of the air temperature or the month. Know that the coldest water of the year there is often in summer. Do not fish low exposed ledges alone. A flotation aid buys the minute that cold-water shock takes away.
Worse when:
- A hard summer south-easter, which drives the upwelling and drops inshore temperature sharply within a day
- Fishing in shorts and a T-shirt because the air is warm, which the water is not
- Wading or rock-hopping to a stance at low water with a rising tide behind you
Check the rules before you fish
Fishing laws, bylaws, access rules, seasons, bait restrictions and permitted methods vary by location and can change. Check the current rules from the relevant authority and the water you intend to fish before fishing.
Check with:
- Current national or regional law for where you are fishing
- Current local bylaws
- The relevant fisheries authority
- The landowner, club or fishery whose water it is
- Any restrictions specific to the species or the method you intend to use

Bronze bream
A relatedness claim made for identification rather than for taxonomy: these are the pairs a reader holding one has to tell apart, and in several cases the rules that apply to them differ. The evidence names the object's binomial because the common names are precisely what collides.
