A silver, large-eyed predator of clear coastal streams from Africa to the Pacific, requiring an unobstructed connection to the sea to complete its life cycle.

Jungle perch is the fish of clear, fast, rainforest-shaded coastal streams across the Indo-Pacific — a bright silver, large-eyed, hard-fighting predator that sits in pools and runs and takes insects and small fish from the current.

Its life cycle is the important thing. Larvae develop at sea and juveniles then run back up into fresh water, which means a jungle perch population depends absolutely on an unobstructed connection between stream and ocean. Weirs, road culverts and barrages remove them from entire catchments, and in Australia the species disappeared from many southern streams for exactly that reason.

It takes surface lures and dry flies readily, which makes it a genuinely exciting light-tackle target.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Amphidromous: adults live and feed in fresh water, larvae develop at sea, and juveniles migrate back upstream. That dependence on connectivity is the single most important fact about the species' conservation.

Adults spawn in lower river reaches or estuaries and larvae are carried to sea, returning as juveniles to run upstream. Barriers anywhere in that path break the cycle for everything above them.

Feeding and senses

Takes insects, small fish, crustaceans and fruit falling from overhanging forest, feeding at the surface and in the current.

A clear-water sight feeder with large eyes suited to shaded streams and low light, taking prey from the drift and the surface.

Through the year

Movements follow wet-season flows, with upstream juvenile runs and adult spawning migrations tied to rainfall and river connection to the sea.
