Why bait dies quickly

Almost all live bait dies of one of four things — heat, oxygen, its own waste, or handling damage — and three of them are the same problem seen from different angles.
Bait dies for reasons that are physical and predictable, and the reason it feels like bad luck is that the causes are invisible until the bait is already dead.
HEAT is the largest. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water, and a warm animal uses more of it. Those two effects compound, so a bucket that was comfortable in the shade becomes lethal in the sun far faster than the temperature change suggests. This is the same relationship that governs releasing fish in warm water, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.
OXYGEN is the direct version of the same problem. A sealed container has a fixed supply; a crowded one exhausts it quickly. Surface area matters more than volume, because gas exchange happens at the top.
OWN WASTE is the one people miss. Ammonia from excretion accumulates in a closed container and is toxic well before the water looks or smells wrong. It is why changing water helps more than adding water, and why a bait container that has not been cleaned starts killing bait sooner each time it is used.
HANDLING DAMAGE kills more slowly and just as reliably. A fish gripped hard, a worm broken, a maggot crushed against a lid — damaged bait dies over hours rather than minutes and takes the rest down with it as it decomposes.
The fifth cause is not the bait's fault at all: many baits are simply kept in conditions nothing like the ones they came from, and cold-water species held warm are being asked to survive a climate rather than a container.
Temperature is the lever, and it works both ways
Cooling live bait does two useful things at once: it raises the water's capacity to hold oxygen and lowers the animal's demand for it. That is why a frozen bottle floated in a bait bucket outperforms an aerator in hot weather, and why the two together outperform either.
The caution is shock. Dropping bait from warm water into cold water abruptly can kill it outright, particularly small fish, so cooling gradually matters more than cooling far.
For invertebrate baits the same logic runs colder still. Maggots, worms and casters keep for weeks near refrigeration temperatures and for days at room temperature, which is a difference of an order of magnitude achieved with no equipment at all.

The welfare argument, which is not a footnote
Live bait is an animal being kept for a purpose, and the standards that apply to a fish being released apply to it as well.
The practical consequences point the same way as the practical fishing ones: uncrowded, cool, clean water; minimal handling; and not keeping more than will be used. Bait kept badly dies badly and fishes badly, so there is no trade-off to argue about here.
Where a bait species is a fish, the same handling rules apply as for anything else — wet hands, support, minimal air — and where it is an invertebrate, crushing and desiccation are the harms to avoid.
The one that is not about the container
Moving live bait between waters spreads disease, parasites and non-native species, and it is the mechanism behind a substantial share of aquatic introductions.
That is a separate problem from keeping bait alive, and it is worth stating on this page because the solution to bait dying is sometimes offered as 'catch it fresh where you are fishing' — which is good advice in one direction and, done in reverse, is exactly how a water gets a species it did not have.
Unused live bait should not be released. Where and whether bait may be collected or moved is a local regulatory question and genuinely varies.
