What to do with bait you did not use

Tipping leftover bait into the water at the end of a session is one of the principal routes by which non-native species, pathogens and parasites are introduced. It is also almost universally done with good intentions.

Releasing unused live bait, or tipping bait container water, introduces the bait organism and everything travelling with it — parasites, pathogens and larvae — into a water it did not come from. Established introductions cannot be reversed and have permanently altered fisheries.

What reduces it: Take unused bait home, keep or dispose of it in domestic waste well away from any watercourse, and never tip bait or bait water into a venue. Check, clean and dry nets, buckets and footwear between waters.

Worse when:

  • Bait obtained at a different water, catchment or country
  • Live fish used as bait, which is separately controlled almost everywhere
  • Waters with no existing population of the bait species

THE HABIT IS NEARLY UNIVERSAL AND THE REASONING IS SYMPATHETIC. The session is over, there is live bait left, and putting it in the water looks kinder than putting it in a bin. The problem is that the water is not where the bait came from.

WHAT ACTUALLY GETS RELEASED.

THE ORGANISM ITSELF. Live baits are frequently not native to the water they are used on, and some are not native to the country. A bait species that establishes changes the fishery permanently, and there is no undoing it. The list of introductions traced to bait release is long and includes crayfish, fish, amphipods and worms.

WHAT IS LIVING ON AND IN IT. Parasites, bacteria and viruses travel with a live animal, and fish pathogens have moved between catchments this way. This is why the movement of live fish is separately controlled almost everywhere, usually more strictly than the movement of anything else.

THE WATER IT WAS SITTING IN. Bait container water contains whatever was suspended in it, including larvae and spores far too small to see. Tipping the water is a release even when the bait itself is kept.

THE PACKAGING. Which is a litter problem rather than a biosecurity one and is no less real.

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD, in order of preference.

BUY OR COLLECT WHAT YOU WILL USE. The problem is largely avoided upstream.

TAKE IT HOME AND KEEP IT PROPERLY. Most baits keep for another session in a fridge or a bait fridge, and several keep for months if frozen — which is the ordinary answer for the great majority of leftover bait.

DISPOSE OF IT SO IT CANNOT REACH ANY WATERCOURSE. Domestic waste, sealed. Not the bankside, not a hedge, not a drain, and not a compost heap that drains to a ditch.

NEVER MOVE IT TO ANOTHER WATER, whether to fish there or to release there. This is the case where a well-meant act is the highest-risk one available.

AND THE EQUIPMENT MATTERS TOO. Buckets, nets, keepnets, waders and boots carry water and organisms between venues. Check, clean and dry is the standard published approach, it is not onerous, and it addresses the same pathway this record is about — which is why the two belong together rather than apart.
