Rig safety: what happens if the line breaks

Every rig should be designed so that a fish which breaks free is genuinely free. A fish towing a fixed lead or a length of line is not lost — it is condemned, and the design choice that decides this is made before the cast.

A fish that breaks free while attached to a fixed lead tows it permanently. It cannot feed or move normally, the lead snags on structure, and the fish may be anchored to the bottom by its own mouth. Death follows from starvation, exhaustion or predation.

What reduces it: Build every rig so the weight can separate under load, make the link to the weight the weakest component, and test any release mechanism by hand before fishing. Where a rig cannot be made safe, do not use it.

Worse when:

  • Hooklengths stronger than the main line
  • Snaggy ground where a break-off is likely rather than possible

EntanglementCan cause injury needing treatment

Lost monofilament persists in the water for years and continues to entangle fish, diving birds and mammals. A rig pulled for a break can leave many metres of line rather than a few centimetres.

What reduces it: Cut losses as short as the situation allows rather than pulling everything back through the snag, retrieve what can be retrieved, and take all waste line home rather than leaving it on the bank.

THE QUESTION IS NOT WHETHER THE LINE WILL BREAK. IT IS WHAT THE FISH IS LEFT CARRYING WHEN IT DOES.

THREE OUTCOMES ARE POSSIBLE, and the rig decides which one happens.

THE FISH IS FREE. Line parts at or near the hook, and the fish carries a hook. Hooks corrode, are shed, or are tolerated; survival rates for fish carrying a single hook are far better than most anglers assume, particularly where the hook is in the jaw.

THE FISH TOWS TACKLE. Line parts above a fixed weight. The fish now drags a lead, permanently. It cannot feed normally, the weight snags on structure and holds it, and the outcome is not in doubt. This is the failure the whole subject exists to prevent.

THE FISH IS TETHERED. Line parts above the weight AND the weight then snags. The fish is anchored to the bottom by its own mouth. This is the worst outcome available in angling and it is entirely a design failure.

HOW A RIG IS BUILT TO AVOID IT.

THE WEAKEST LINK IS PUT AT THE LEAD, DELIBERATELY. The link between rig and weight is made from lighter material than anything else, so that a snagged lead is what breaks. This costs a lead and saves everything else.

THE WEIGHT IS ABLE TO COME OFF. Clips that release under load, semi-fixed arrangements that pull free, and rotten-bottom links designed to part are all versions of the same idea. Any of them is acceptable; none of them is optional on a fixed rig.

NOTHING CAN JAM. Beads, sleeves and tubing that are meant to release must be checked for the swollen or compressed state that makes them grip. A safety clip that will not release is worse than no clip at all, because it looks like a safety feature.

THE HOOKLENGTH IS NOT THE STRONGEST COMPONENT. If the hooklength is stronger than the main line, a break-off happens high up the rig and the fish gets everything below it.

AND THE PART NOBODY DESIGNS FOR: DISCARDED AND LOST LINE. A rig lost to a snag stays in the water. Monofilament persists for a very long time, continues to entangle fish and birds, and is one of the more consequential ordinary harms recreational angling does. Retrieving what can be retrieved, cutting losses short rather than pulling for a break that leaves metres of line, and taking waste line home are the practical responses, and they belong in the same conversation as rig design rather than in a separate one.

Testing your own rig for the failure you cannot see

The design principles above are only worth anything if a particular rig actually obeys them, and almost nobody checks. The check takes two minutes on dry land and it is worth building into the routine of making tackle up.

THE TEST FOR SHEDDING. Make the rig up, hold the hook firmly, and pull steadily on the mainline until something parts. Watch what separates and what stays attached to the hook. If the lead stays attached to the hook end, the arrangement tethers a fish and needs changing — a lead clip that has not been left loose enough, a bead pushed too hard onto a swivel, a tail rubber that grips too well.

DO IT WITH THE COMPONENTS YOU ARE ACTUALLY USING. Lead clips, tail rubbers, beads and swivels vary between manufacturers and between batches, and the whole safety property depends on one component releasing under a load that another does not. A rig that shed correctly with last year's clips is not evidence about this year's.

AND DO IT AGAIN AFTER IT HAS BEEN FISHED. Silt, sand and grit work into a lead clip and can lock it. A rig that has been in the water and dragged over ground is a different mechanism from the one that was tested in the shed.

THE OTHER FAILURE IS THE HOOKLENGTH BEING TOO STRONG. If the test above parts the mainline rather than the hooklength, everything below the break stays with the fish. The fix is a hooklength deliberately weaker than the mainline, and the check is which one goes.

A TETHERED FISH IS A SPECIFIC AND SLOW OUTCOME. A fish trailing a lead cannot feed normally, cannot hold position in flow and is anchored to the bottom if the lead snags. This is not a hypothetical; it is the reason the safety-rig argument exists in carp and pike angling at all, and the reason fisheries write rules about it.

AND THE ARGUMENT EXTENDS BEYOND THE FISH. Everything that stays in the water stays there. A rig that sheds a lead loses a lead; one that does not lose anything until the mainline parts loses a lead, a trace, hooks and a length of line — which is the discarded-tackle problem stated as a design decision rather than as an appeal.
