How salmon find their way home

Two mechanisms working at two scales: something magnetic and celestial to cross an ocean, and an imprinted memory of a river's smell to find the last few kilometres. The second is far better established than the first.

AN ADULT SALMON RETURNING FROM THE OCEAN LOCATES THE RIVER IT HATCHED IN with a precision that is genuinely remarkable, and the explanation has two parts operating at very different scales.

THE OCEAN SCALE, which is the less settled half. A fish crossing hundreds or thousands of kilometres of featureless ocean needs a compass and some sense of position. The leading account involves the geomagnetic field: young fish appear to acquire a record of the magnetic characteristics of the area where they entered the sea, and use magnetic information to navigate back towards it. Evidence includes experimental responses to altered magnetic fields and correspondences between shifts in the field and shifts in returning migration routes. Celestial cues, ocean currents and temperature gradients have all been proposed as contributors. This is an active research area and the honest description is that the broad picture has substantial support and the details are not settled.

THE RIVER SCALE, which is very well established. Salmon imprint on the chemical signature of their natal stream as juveniles — during smoltification in particular — and locate it on return by smell. The classic experiments date back decades: fish with blocked olfactory organs fail to home correctly while controls succeed, and fish exposed artificially to a chemical during the imprinting window later return to water containing it. A river's chemical signature comes from its geology, soils, vegetation and the organisms in it, and it is apparently distinctive enough to be recognised among all the water entering a coastline.

HOMING IS NOT PERFECT, AND THAT IS THE POINT. A small proportion of fish stray to other rivers every generation. That is not a failure of the mechanism; it is what allows new habitat to be colonised and populations to be rescued, and it is why straying rates matter to anybody managing a river.

WHAT FOLLOWS PRACTICALLY. A salmon river's run is its own population, adapted to that river, and it cannot simply be replaced from elsewhere. Anything that changes the water's chemical signature — a major discharge, an abstraction, a large change in land use — potentially interferes with the mechanism that brings fish back. And a barrier low in the system blocks fish that have crossed an ocean successfully at the last few hundred metres.

What is well established and what is not

The two halves of salmon navigation sit at very different levels of confidence, and separating them is the useful part.

OLFACTORY HOMING IN FRESH WATER is about as securely established as any behavioural mechanism in fish biology. The experimental design is clean — impair the sense, observe the failure; imprint an artificial cue, observe the later response — it has been repeated across species and decades, and the mechanism is understood at the level of the imprinting window.

OCEANIC NAVIGATION is supported rather than settled. Magnetic map and compass senses have real experimental support in salmonids and in other migratory animals, and correlations between field shifts and migration route shifts are suggestive. What is not established is exactly which cues are used in which combination, how the information is stored, or how much individual variation there is.
