Smoltification, and the change that makes the sea possible

A full metamorphosis rather than a growth stage: over weeks a river fish rebuilds its physiology, its appearance and its behaviour into a sea fish, and the window in which it can make the crossing is narrow.
A YOUNG SALMON IN A RIVER IS A PARR — territorial, camouflaged with dark vertical marks, adapted to holding station in flowing fresh water. The fish that leaves for the sea is a SMOLT, and it is a different animal.
WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES, and the breadth of it is the point.
THE PHYSIOLOGY. The gill's cell populations change to reverse the direction of salt handling, from absorbing salt in fresh water to excreting it at sea. Kidney function changes. The hormonal control system driving all of it changes. This is the substantial part and it is what makes seawater survivable.
THE APPEARANCE. The parr marks are covered by silvering and the fish becomes counter-shaded — dark above, silver below — which is camouflage for open water rather than for a stony river bed.
THE BEHAVIOUR. Territorial defence of a river position is abandoned. The fish begins to shoal, and its orientation to current reverses from holding against it to moving with it downstream.
THE BODY SHAPE changes towards a more streamlined, migratory form.
IT IS TIMED BY PHOTOPERIOD AND TEMPERATURE, which means it is timed by the season rather than by the fish's size alone — though size thresholds matter too, and in a given river some parr smolt after one year and others after several.
AND THE WINDOW IS NARROW. A smolt is physiologically ready for seawater for a limited period. If it is delayed in fresh water past that window — by low flows, by a barrier, by an impoundment it cannot find its way out of — it can lose smolt status and revert, and the migration is lost for that year or entirely. This is the specific reason that delays at weirs, dams and hydropower intakes are damaging out of all proportion to their apparent scale: they do not merely slow the fish, they can spend its window.
WHY IT MATTERS TO AN ANGLER. Smolts are physiologically stressed, delicate and moving downstream in spring, and they are extremely vulnerable to handling. Their survival at sea in the first weeks is the single largest determinant of how many adults return years later, which means the freshwater phase you can see and the marine phase you cannot are linked through this one transition.
