Taimen is the largest salmonid on earth — a wholly freshwater predator of the big cold rivers of Siberia, Mongolia and northern China that grows to well over a metre and lives for decades.

It is also in trouble. Taimen are extremely slow-growing, mature late, and are highly vulnerable to poaching, habitat degradation and mining pollution across their range. Populations have declined severely and the species is assessed as Vulnerable, with some river populations effectively gone.

It hunts fish, and famously also rodents and birds taken from the surface, which is why mouse patterns are a standard part of taimen fly fishing. Where fishing is permitted it is conducted almost entirely on a strict catch-and-release basis, often through managed operations that fund river protection.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Extremely slow-growing, late-maturing and long-lived, with individuals recorded at several decades. A large taimen represents an irreplaceable amount of time, which is the entire argument for release.

Spawns in spring in shallow gravel tributaries after ice-out, with females cutting redds. Spawning fish are concentrated and highly vulnerable to poaching, which is a principal cause of decline.

Feeding and senses

A wholly piscivorous predator taking grayling, lenok and other river fish, and notably taking rodents, birds and other terrestrial animals from the surface.

A visual hunter of clear cold rivers, ambushing from deep runs and pools and taking prey at the surface, most actively in low light.

Through the year

Spawns in spring, feeds heavily through the short summer and into autumn, and overwinters in deep river pools. The angling season is short and defined by ice.

Europe and Asia: some upper tributaries of Pechora and Kama (with tributaries Vyatka, Belaya, Vishera, Chusovaya) in Volga drainage; Siberia from Ob' to Yana drainages; Amur and some adjacent drainages. Prior to the impoundment of Kama, used to enter Volga and to reach downriver to Samara

Why anglers care

A specialist destination target in Mongolia, Siberia and parts of Russia, fished with very large streamers, mouse patterns and lures on heavy fly and spinning tackle. Its significance is as the largest salmonid in the world and as a conservation case: well-run catch-and-release operations have demonstrably funded protection and reduced poaching on some rivers.

Handling and returning

Keep the fish in the water. Use barbless single hooks, do not lift a large taimen clear, support it horizontally in the shallows if it must be handled at all, and revive fully in current before release. Given the species' age and status, every fish returned matters.

The largest salmonid, in the coldest water, with the least margin for error

Taimen handling is governed by one fact that overrides the teeth, the size and everything else: this is a very slow-growing, late-maturing, long-lived fish in rivers that hold few of them, and the fisheries that exist are almost entirely catch-and-release for that reason. A fish that dies after release is a fish removed from a population that may take decades to replace it.

SO THE RULES ARE STRICTER THAN FOR ANY OTHER SALMONID. Keep the fish in the water throughout. Do not beach it on gravel or sand, which strips the slime coat and is the commonest avoidable injury in this fishery. Do not lift a large one clear of the water at all — support it in the shallows for a photograph if one is taken, horizontally, with a hand under the pectoral region and one at the wrist of the tail.

THE TEETH ARE REAL BUT SECONDARY. A taimen has a mouth full of small sharp teeth including on the tongue and palate, and a hand introduced there comes out marked. Pliers, and barbless single hooks, which are standard or required in most managed taimen fisheries precisely because they shorten the unhooking.

THE SIZE IS THE HAZARD TO THE FISH. A metre-plus salmonid held vertically or unsupported is carrying its whole mass on a spine and a jaw that never bear it in water. The internal damage is invisible and the fish swims off.

AND THE WATER IS COLD, which helps: cold well-oxygenated water gives a released fish far better odds than warm water does, and the recovery is quicker. That is the one thing working in this species' favour, and it does not offset the rest.

The largest salmonid, in cold clear rivers that have not been dammed

Taimen habitat is simple to describe and almost impossible to find intact, and the second fact is the more important one.

THE REQUIREMENT IS LARGE, COLD, CLEAN, FREE-FLOWING RIVER. Taimen occupy river systems across Siberia, Mongolia and parts of Central and East Asia, and they need cold water, high oxygen, clarity, and — critically — a river long enough and connected enough to support a very large, long-lived, wide-ranging predator. They use deep pools and runs as holding water, riffles and gravel for spawning, and they move considerable distances seasonally between the two.

THE SIZE OF THE ANIMAL SETS THE SIZE OF THE HABITAT. Taimen are the largest salmonids in the world, extremely slow-growing, and very long-lived — individuals reach ages measured in decades. A predator with those traits sits at the top of the river's food web and requires a great deal of river per fish: an entire system supports a small number of large individuals. That means population density is naturally low and that a river's taimen are not readily replaced.

THEY ARE STRONGLY PISCIVOROUS AND OPPORTUNISTIC, taking other fish, and famously small mammals and birds from the surface — which is why the mouse pattern works and why it is not a novelty. That diet is only supportable in a productive, connected river with an intact fish community, so the species' presence is contingent on everything below it being intact too.

AND THE THREATS ARE ALL HABITAT-SHAPED. Damming fragments the long migratory corridors the fish requires; mining and logging deliver sediment that destroys spawning gravel; road access opens previously remote rivers to pressure a slow-growing low-density species cannot absorb. Taimen have declined severely across much of the range and are assessed accordingly.

WHICH MAKES THEM AN INDICATOR IN THE STRICT SENSE. A river holding taimen is a river that is cold, clean, connected along its length, and still supports a full fish community — because the fish cannot persist without all four. Where they have gone, they have generally gone because one of those conditions failed, and the river still looks like a river.
