Before you spearfish — this comes first
- Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
- Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
- Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
- Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
- Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
- Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.
Diving for scallops

Safety
Shallow water blackout and breath-hold loss of consciousness — Can cause serious injury or death
Scallop diving is repetitive: many descents to a working depth over a long session, frequently with inadequate surface intervals because the diver feels fine. Cumulative hypoxia and the impulse to collect one more animal before surfacing are the two routes to a blackout, which is silent and gives the diver no warning.
What reduces it: Take full surface intervals between dives rather than the ones that feel sufficient. Surface on your own plan, not on the last scallop. Dive one up and one down with a competent buddy watching every dive.
Worse when:
- Long sessions, where the temptation to shorten surface intervals grows as the bag fills.
- Cold water, which increases the work of every dive.
- Current, which makes each dive harder and each ascent longer.
Moving water and currents — Can cause injury needing treatment
Scallop ground tends to be swept by tidal current, because that is the ground scallops prefer. A diver working the bottom in current is being carried away from the entry point and from any surface support, and the return swim is done tired.
What reduces it: Work the slack of the tide, know the direction the stream will run, plan an exit downstream rather than upstream, and use a marked surface float and line so a boat and a buddy know where you are.
Hypothermia — Can cause injury needing treatment
Repetitive diving in cold water over a long session produces progressive cooling that impairs judgement and coordination before the diver notices, which is exactly when breath-hold decisions are being made.
What reduces it: Dress for the water and the session length rather than the entry, and end the session on time rather than on the catch.
Diving for scallops is grouped with spearfishing because the same people do it with the same equipment, and it is a genuinely different activity. Sprint 29's audit found the catalogue silent on it, and it is worth its own record precisely because the differences are the important part.
THE ACTIVITY. Scallops lie on or lightly recessed into sand, gravel or maerl bottom, generally in a depth band that a competent freediver can work. They are located visually — a scallop's shell edge and the row of small blue eyes along the mantle are the tells, and a recessed animal shows as a shell-shaped outline in the sediment — and picked up by hand. There is no gun, no shot, no pursuit and no target selection under pressure.
WHICH IS WHY THE HAZARD PROFILE IS DIFFERENT. This is repetitive descending and ascending, many times, in cold water, frequently with a lift bag or catch bag that changes buoyancy as it fills, and frequently in current because scallop ground tends to be swept. The two things that hurt people are repeated dives to a working depth without adequate surface intervals, and the temptation to stay down for one more animal.
HAND-DIVING IS ALSO A GENUINELY LOW-IMPACT METHOD, and this is worth stating because it is one of the few cases where a recreational practice is unambiguously gentler than its commercial alternative. Dredging for scallops drags a toothed bar across the seabed and damages the habitat it works, which is why hand-dived scallops command a premium and why some areas are reserved for diving. A diver takes individual animals and leaves the ground.
AND THE FOOD SAFETY QUESTION IS THE ONE THAT MATTERS MOST. Scallops are filter feeders, and filter feeders concentrate whatever is in the water. That means two things a diver cannot assess by inspection: sanitary contamination, where the ground is influenced by sewage or run-off; and algal biotoxins, which cause paralytic, diarrhetic and amnesic shellfish poisoning, are not destroyed by cooking or freezing, and cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Scallops are additionally known to retain some biotoxins in the gut and roe long after a bloom has passed, which is why several jurisdictions distinguish between the adductor muscle and the whole animal in their advice.
SO THE HARVEST DECISION IS MADE FROM MONITORING DATA, NOT FROM THE ANIMAL. Classified harvest areas, current biotoxin results and any closure in force are the only information that answers the question, and they change on a timescale of days. Where they are unavailable for a piece of ground, the honest position is that the risk is unassessed. Nothing here states what applies anywhere.
Why a scallop cannot tell you whether it is safe
The single most important thing about gathering any filter-feeding bivalve is that the animal carries no signal of the two hazards that matter, and experienced gatherers get this wrong as often as beginners.
FILTER FEEDING IS CONCENTRATION. A scallop pumps a large volume of water across its gills to extract plankton, and anything else suspended in that water — bacteria, viruses, algal toxins — is concentrated in its tissues along with the food. A perfectly healthy-looking animal from contaminated or bloom-affected water is a hazardous animal.
BIOTOXINS ARE THE SERIOUS CASE. Paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins are produced by dinoflagellates and can be fatal. Amnesic shellfish poisoning is caused by domoic acid from certain diatoms and can cause permanent neurological damage. Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning is less severe and more common. All three share the properties that matter here: they survive cooking, they survive freezing, and they cannot be detected by appearance, smell or taste. There is no kitchen technique and no folk test that helps.
AND THE OLD SEASONAL RULE IS NOT A SAFETY RULE. The advice to avoid shellfish in months without an R tracks a real pattern — spawning leaves bivalves thin and poor — and it is a quality observation. Blooms occur when they occur, and a month with an R in it protects nobody.
SCALLOPS HAVE A SPECIFIC COMPLICATION. They retain some toxins, notably domoic acid, in the gut and other tissues for a long time after the water has cleared, and at higher levels than in the adductor muscle. That is why advice in several jurisdictions distinguishes between eating the muscle alone and eating the whole animal including the roe, and why commercial handling shucks them.
WHAT ACTUALLY ANSWERS THE QUESTION is the classification status of the harvest area and the current biotoxin monitoring result for it. Those are held by the relevant food safety or environmental health authority, they are specific to a piece of ground, and they change within days. Where no monitoring exists for a stretch of coast, the risk is unassessed rather than absent — and that is a different statement from saying it is safe.
