Spotted sorubim is one of the great river catfish of South America — a long, silver-grey fish covered in dark spots, with a distinctive flattened shovel-shaped snout and long barbels, hunting at night in the Paraná, Paraguay and São Francisco systems.

It is a highly valued food fish and a principal angling target across Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia, taken on live and dead bait fished on the bottom in deep river channels and below rapids.

It is also under real pressure. Dams have fragmented the long migrations these fish depend on for spawning, and the species has declined in parts of its range as a direct result.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Long-lived and slow to mature, and dependent on long free-flowing river reaches for spawning migrations. Damming of the Paraná and its tributaries has directly reduced recruitment.

Undertakes long upstream spawning migrations during the wet season, triggered by rising water and temperature. Those migrations are the life-history stage most damaged by river fragmentation.

Feeding and senses

A nocturnal predator taking fish from the riverbed and mid-channel, locating prey by barbel contact and smell in turbid water.

Hunts in darkness and turbidity using barbels, taste and lateral-line detection. Sight plays almost no part, which is why the fishery is a night and bait fishery.

Through the year

Migrates upstream to spawn on rising wet-season water, and concentrates in deep channels and below obstructions during low water when it is most accessible to anglers.

Why anglers care

A principal target of Paraná and São Francisco basin angling, fished with live and cut bait on the bottom at night from boat and bank, and highly valued as food. Its significance is size and quality, and the fishery is a visible indicator of what river fragmentation does to migratory species.

Handling and returning

Stout serrated pectoral and dorsal spines cause severe punctures, and the fish is heavy and strong. Support from beneath clear of the fins, wear gloves, and use long pliers. Support large fish horizontally and return them promptly.

Long spines, a flat body, and a fish built to be held wrong

Sorubim have an elongated, flattened, scaleless body and long, stiff, sharp pectoral spines that project well out from the body line. The shape invites the grip that gets people hurt: a hand around the fish behind the head, which is exactly where the spines are.

THE PUNCTURE IS DEEP AND THE WOUND IS WARM-WATER FRESHWATER, which is the combination that infects. Clean it properly and watch it. This matters more in this fishery than in most because the fishing is remote.

HOLD THE FISH FROM UNDERNEATH along its length. The flat body actually makes this easy once you stop trying to grip it: a hand flat under the belly forward, one under the tail region, and the fish is supported with nothing near the spines.

THE MOUTH IS WIDE AND HAS NO CUTTING TEETH, so pliers can work freely, but the jaws are strong enough to hold a hand uncomfortably.

AND THE SLIME COAT IS THE FISH'S WHOLE DEFENCE. Scaleless, warm water, high bacterial load. Wet hands, wet mat, no sand, no dry boat floor, minimal air time. A sorubim returned looking perfect after being laid on a hot dry gunwale is a sorubim with a large area of damaged skin.

WHAT NOT TO ASSUME. That because the fish is large and looks tough it can be handled roughly. Large tropical catfish have poor survival records after casual handling, and almost all of it is slime-coat damage and support failure rather than anything dramatic.
