A small, spiny, bottom-dwelling perch relative that feeds in darkness and turbid water, and a named prey item of zander and pike across northern Europe.

The ruffe is a small percid of lowland rivers, lakes and brackish coastal water, and its distinguishing feature as an animal is how well it operates where other fish cannot see.

Ruffe have an unusually well-developed lateral line and cephalic sensory canal system, which allows them to locate benthic prey in complete darkness and in turbid water. They feed heavily at night, and in the turbid, eutrophic lowland waters much of northern Europe now has, that is a considerable advantage.

It is also a species with a significant invasion history. Introduced to the Laurentian Great Lakes in ballast water, ruffe established rapidly and became a management concern because of competition with native percids, which is a useful reminder that a small, unremarkable fish can have large consequences when moved.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Matures at two to three years and rarely exceeds seven. Growth is slow and populations can reach very high densities in productive lowland water, which is what makes ruffe a substantial component of predator diets despite its small size.

Spawns in spring and early summer, laying adhesive eggs in strands over stones, gravel and vegetation in shallow water, often in several batches over an extended period.

Feeding and senses

A benthic feeder taking chironomid larvae and other aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and occasional fish eggs, located largely by the lateral line rather than by sight and taken mainly after dark.

The lateral line and cephalic canal system are exceptionally developed and are the dominant senses, allowing feeding in darkness and turbidity. Vision is comparatively unimportant, which is why the species does well in water where percids reliant on sight do less well.

Through the year

Present year-round and active through the winter, when many other small fish are not. That winter availability makes it a useful prey species for predators at the time of year when alternatives are scarcest.

Distribution

Northern and central Europe and northern Asia, from Britain and France east through the Baltic basin to Siberia, in lowland rivers, lakes, canals and brackish coastal water. Introduced and invasive in the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Handling and returning

The dorsal and gill cover spines are sharp and will prick a careless hand. Handle with the fins folded and wet hands. Never move live ruffe between waters; the species is a demonstrated invasive.
