Why fish shoal

Shoaling reduces each individual's chance of being eaten and improves the odds of finding food, which is why prey species shoal tightly and predators exploit the edges.

Shoaling is one of the best-explained behaviours in fish biology, and the explanations are worth knowing because they predict where fish will be.

The dominant driver is predation. In a shoal, an individual's chance of being the one taken falls simply because there are others — the dilution effect. A dense shoal also makes it genuinely harder for a predator to fix on a single target, which is why bait balls tighten rather than scatter when attacked.

The second driver is foraging. Many eyes find patchy food faster, and information about a food source spreads through a shoal quickly.

There is a cost: a shoal competes with itself for food and is more conspicuous. Which is why shoal size and cohesion change with conditions rather than being fixed.

Shoal, school, and how tightness varies

The terms are often used interchangeably and have a technical distinction: a shoal is a social aggregation, and a school is a shoal swimming in a polarised, coordinated way.

Tightness responds to threat. A relaxed shoal of bait fish spreads and feeds; the same shoal under attack compresses into a ball and polarises. Divers and anglers both see this transition, and it is a reliable signal that predators are present.

Size and species composition matter too: many shoals sort by size, because a fish that is conspicuously larger or smaller than its neighbours loses the dilution benefit.

Many species shoal as juveniles and become solitary as adults, which is why the same species can be found in both patterns depending on size.

Finding fish, and the consequence for handling

The practical translation is that finding one fish of a shoaling species usually means finding many, and that the productive approach is to locate the shoal rather than to cover water evenly.

Predator anglers use the inverse: locating bait shoals locates predators, and surface activity, working birds and sounder marks are all ways of finding the prey rather than the target.

There is a conservation consequence as well, and it is not minor. Shoaling makes a species easy to over-harvest locally, because catching many fish from one place is easy and gives a misleading impression of abundance. Species that aggregate to spawn compound this. It is one of the reasons the catalogue treats concentrated catches from aggregations as a decision rather than a result.
