Before you spearfish — this comes first
- Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
- Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
- Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
- Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
- Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
- Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.
What a fish can see of you underwater

A fish sees contrast, movement and silhouette long before it sees colour — and from below, a diver against the bright surface is the most conspicuous thing in the water regardless of what they are wearing.

Everything that makes a diver less visible to a fish — stillness, settling, staying low, waiting for the fish to commit — also makes the dive longer and quieter, and the reward for it arrives at the point in a breath-hold where the margin is smallest.
What reduces it: Decide the dive time on the surface and surface on it, regardless of what has just become visible. One up and one down, so the ascent is watched. Better concealment is a reason to expect a fish sooner rather than to stay longer.
Precautions that always apply here
- Never spearfish or freedive alone.
- Dive one up, one down: one diver down, one on the surface actively watching, every single dive.
Fish vision is genuinely good, and it is adapted to the light environment the fish lives in rather than to the one a person imagines.
WHAT FISH EYES ARE BUILT FOR. Marine fishes generally have visual pigments matched to the wavelengths that actually reach their depth — which is why deep and open-water species tend towards blue sensitivity, and coastal species in green water towards green. Many species have colour vision; many are also well adapted to low light. The useful conclusion is not that fish see badly. It is that they see a DIFFERENT SCENE, one in which the wavelengths a person is thinking about may not be present.
CONTRAST BEATS COLOUR. Because absorption removes colour with depth and distance, what remains at range is the difference in brightness between an object and its background. A diver is detected as a shape that is darker or lighter than what is behind them, moving. Colour matching is a close-range consideration; contrast matching is the one that operates at the distance where detection happens.
THE SILHOUETTE PROBLEM. Looking up, a fish sees the surface as a bright field. Anything between it and the surface is a dark shape against that field, and that includes every diver, whatever their suit. This is why approaching fish from above is conspicuous and why divers who work below their fish are working with the light rather than against it. It is also the reason that a diver's own most useful identification angle — from below, looking up — is the same geometry in reverse.
MOVEMENT IS THE STRONGEST SIGNAL. Fish visual systems, like most vertebrate ones, are highly sensitive to motion, and motion is preserved when detail and colour are not. A still diver at ten metres is a shape; the same diver finning is a moving shape, and moving shapes are what predators are.
The camouflage question, answered honestly
Camouflage wetsuits are among the most heavily marketed products in this discipline, and FishingHQ has no commercial interest in the answer.
WHAT IS DEFENSIBLE. Breaking up a large uniform outline reduces its conspicuousness against a structured background. That is a general principle of visual detection and there is no reason it should fail underwater. A pattern that resembles kelp, reef or open blue in the water the diver is actually in is doing something real.
WHAT IS NOT ESTABLISHED. That any particular pattern produces a measurable difference in flight initiation distance in the field, and that the difference is large enough to matter compared with the variables that dominate — depth, distance, movement, whether the fish is silhouetting the diver against the surface, and how heavily the population has been hunted. FishingHQ is not aware of published measurement of the effect, and treats the specific claims made for particular patterns as manufacturer claims rather than as findings.
WHAT FOLLOWS. A camouflage suit is a reasonable thing to own and an unreasonable thing to rely on. A conspicuous diver who moves slowly, stays low, and approaches without silhouetting themselves will be less detectable than a camouflaged one who does the opposite, because those variables act on the signals fish are demonstrably most sensitive to.
And one point that is not about fishing at all: a suit designed to be invisible to fish is also less visible to boats and to a buddy. That trade is worth making deliberately, and it is why a high-visibility float is not optional and why suit colour is a poor place to economise on surface visibility.

Where the science is solid
Three things can be stated without hedging.
FISH VISUAL SYSTEMS ARE MATCHED TO THEIR LIGHT ENVIRONMENT. Visual pigment sensitivity tracks the spectral transmission of the water a species inhabits, which is a well-documented relationship and one of the foundations of visual ecology.
DETECTION UNDERWATER IS CONTRAST-LIMITED RATHER THAN COLOUR-LIMITED AT RANGE. Absorption and scattering degrade colour and edge information with distance; brightness contrast against the background persists longest. This is the same physics that governs what a diver can see of a fish, working in the other direction.
A SHAPE BETWEEN A FISH AND THE SURFACE IS SILHOUETTED. This is geometry and needs no citation beyond the light environment itself — and it is the most reliable practical consequence on this page.
What is NOT established, and is frequently asserted, is the leap from these to specific claims about what a fish concludes from seeing a diver. Detection, recognition and response are three separate steps, and this page addresses the first with confidence and the other two with care.
