Before you spearfish — this comes first
- Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
- Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
- Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
- Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
- Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
- Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.
How fish respond to a diver

Fish treat an approaching diver as a potential predator, and the distance at which they leave is measurable, species-specific and — importantly — learned from how heavily they have been hunted.

Understanding how fish respond makes a diver better at waiting, and waiting for an approaching fish is the single most reliable reason divers give themselves for extending a breath-hold. The urge arrives when the fish is nearly in range and the margin is nearly gone.
What reduces it: Set the time on the surface and surface on it whatever is approaching. Accept the lost fish; that is the trade and it is not close. One up, one down, on every dive.
Precautions that always apply here
- Never spearfish or freedive alone.
- Dive one up, one down: one diver down, one on the surface actively watching, every single dive.
The single most useful concept here has a name in behavioural ecology: FLIGHT INITIATION DISTANCE. It is the distance at which an animal breaks off what it is doing and moves away from an approaching threat, and it is not a fixed property of a species. It is a decision, and it responds to circumstances.
WHAT DECIDES IT.
PREDATION HISTORY. This is the finding that matters most, and it is measured rather than assumed: reef fish in areas that are fished flee at greater distances than the same species inside protected areas, and the effect is strongest in the larger-bodied species that are actually targeted. Fish that are hunted become harder to approach. That is a learned population-level response to human predation, not a story divers tell.
BODY SIZE. Larger individuals within a species generally allow a closer approach less readily. Since larger individuals are the targeted ones, the two effects compound.
SPECIES AND ECOLOGY. A fish whose anti-predator strategy is to hold in a hole behaves nothing like one whose strategy is open-water speed, and neither behaves like a fish that relies on being one of ten thousand. Flight distance is only meaningful within a species.
CONTEXT. Feeding fish tolerate closer approach than resting fish. Fish on a spawning aggregation may tolerate remarkably close approach, which is exactly why aggregations are vulnerable. Fish in current behave differently from fish in still water. Fish that have been shot at in the last hour behave differently from fish that have not.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR A DIVER, AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR A PLATFORM. For the diver: wariness is information about the water, not about their technique. For FishingHQ: the effect of fishing pressure on behaviour is one of the clearest windows anybody has into whether a place is heavily fished — and a diver who notices that the fish have become harder to approach over five years has observed something real about that population.
What the evidence establishes
Flight initiation distance in targeted reef fishes has been measured and compared between fished areas and protected areas, and the difference is in the expected direction: fish in fished areas leave sooner. The effect is species-specific, stronger in larger-bodied targeted species, and attributed to human predation including spearfishing rather than to disturbance in general.
That is a substantial claim and it carries several consequences.
IT MEANS BEHAVIOUR IS PLASTIC. Fish are not responding to divers with a fixed reflex; they are responding to what encountering large approaching animals has meant for that population.
IT MEANS PROTECTION CHANGES BEHAVIOUR, not just abundance. That is one of the mechanisms behind the observation that fish inside reserves appear both more numerous and more approachable, and it is worth understanding before concluding from a single dive that a place is full of fish.
IT MEANS SPEARFISHING SELECTS FOR WARINESS. A method that removes the individuals that allow close approach leaves the ones that do not. Over time that is selection pressure on behaviour, and it is one of the more interesting and less discussed ecological effects of the method.
FishingHQ states the direction of these findings and not their magnitude, because the effect sizes come from particular species on particular reefs and would be misleading transplanted to a kelp gully in the north Atlantic.

What divers commonly report, held separately
Spearfishers report a set of consistent observations that the scientific literature does not settle. FishingHQ records them as reports rather than as findings, and names them so a reader can weigh them.
THAT FISH BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO A DIVER WHO IS SIMPLY PRESENT. Divers describe fish that flee at first and return within minutes if nothing happens. This is plausible — habituation to a non-threatening stimulus is well established across animals generally — but whether the fish in question have habituated, resumed feeding for unrelated reasons, or been replaced by different individuals is not something a diver can distinguish.
THAT AGITATED MOVEMENT SPOOKS FISH MORE THAN CALM MOVEMENT. Very widely reported. The mechanism proposed for it — that rapid movement produces stronger hydrodynamic and visual signals — is consistent with the sensory physiology, which is why FishingHQ regards it as the most credible item on this list. It remains a report.
THAT DIRECT APPROACH AND DIRECT GAZE TRIGGER FLIGHT SOONER THAN OBLIQUE MOVEMENT. Reported across traditions. Predator-gaze sensitivity is documented in some animals; whether it operates in the fish a diver meets, at the ranges involved, is not established.
THAT FISH IN SOME PLACES ARE CURIOUS ABOUT DIVERS. Certainly true as an observation — some species approach divers reliably — though whether the motivation is curiosity, feeding association, territorial assessment or something else is not known from watching.
A READER SHOULD NOT TAKE THE ABSENCE OF EVIDENCE AS EVIDENCE OF ABSENCE. These are hard things to test and the tests have largely not been done. But a page that presented them as biology would be doing the exact thing this platform exists not to do.

What a fish is actually reacting to, and the four things a diver controls
Divers describe fish as spooky or confident, which locates the behaviour in the animal. Most of it is a response to specific, controllable stimuli, and knowing which ones turns a general instruction to 'be calm' into four decisions.
THE FIRST IS SILHOUETTE. A shape between a fish and the bright surface is the classic predator profile, and it is the reason a diver hanging in mid-water over a fish is far more alarming than the same diver settled against rock with structure behind them. Breaking the outline is worth more than any amount of stillness in the open.
THE SECOND IS APPROACH ANGLE AND CLOSING SPEED. Direct approach at speed is what a predator does. Oblique movement at constant, slow speed reads as something passing, and the difference in how close a fish allows is large. This is also why the last few metres matter more than the first twenty: a fish tolerates a diver at range and re-evaluates continuously as the range closes.
THE THIRD IS SOUND AND PRESSURE. Fish detect water movement and low-frequency pressure through the lateral line before they see anything, so a diver is announced by fin wash, by a gun swinging, by bubbles and by the clatter of gear long before they are visible. `sound-vibration-and-the-lateral-line-underwater` covers the mechanism. The practical version: metal on metal, a loose stringer and a rushed fin stroke are all louder than a diver's presence.
THE FOURTH IS EYE CONTACT AND ORIENTATION, which sounds like folklore and has a mundane explanation. A predator tracking prey faces it and closes; an animal not hunting does neither. Divers who look away and keep the head still while a fish inspects them are read differently from divers who turn to follow it, and the effect is strongest with curious species that come in to look.
AND SPECIES DIFFER MORE THAN CONDITIONS DO. Territorial reef fish return to a known place and can be waited for. Curious species come to inspect a stationary object and are the ones a diver has the best look at. Schooling pelagics respond to the group rather than the individual, so one alarmed fish moves all of them. Heavily dived ground produces fish that have learnt what a diver is, which is why the same species is approachable in one bay and impossible in the next.
WHICH LOOPS BACK TO SELECTIVITY. The whole reason a spearfisher can decline a fish is that these behaviours give them a long look at it. A diver who alarms everything gets short looks, and short looks are where the bad shots come from.
