Before you spearfish — this comes first

  • Get proper instruction before you spearfish. A recognised freediving or spearfishing course teaches the things that actually kill people in this sport, and reading about them is not the same as being taught them.
  • Dive with a buddy, and dive one up, one down — one diver in the water, one on the surface watching them, every dive. A breath-hold blackout is silent and gives no warning; a watching buddy is the difference between an incident and a fatality.
  • Stay inside your own training and experience. Depth and breath-hold times are personal, they change day to day, and nobody else's numbers apply to you.
  • Understand the conditions before you enter the water: visibility, current, swell, tide, boat traffic and your exit. Conditions decide whether a dive is reasonable far more often than skill does.
  • Use equipment you have been shown how to use, check it before every session, and be visible — a marked float and line are how boat traffic knows you are there.
  • Never extend a dive for a fish. No catch is worth pushing a breath-hold, and the urge to take one more second is exactly what a blackout feels like from the inside — which is to say, like nothing at all.

Fish detect water movement with a sense people do not have, and it works in the dark, round corners and behind them — which is why a diver is often detected before being seen.

The same low-frequency signals that alarm fish — an irregular struggling vibration in particular — attract predators. A speared fish on a belt stringer transmits exactly that signal, continuously, from the diver's waist.

What reduces it: Get shot fish out of the water and onto a float or into the boat rather than keeping them on the body, and dispatch them immediately rather than letting them struggle. Leave the water if a predator shows sustained interest.

Boat traffic and being seenCan cause serious injury or death

A diver hears an approaching vessel long before seeing it and cannot reliably tell which direction it is coming from, because underwater sound arrives at both ears too nearly at once for direction to be judged. Hearing an engine is therefore not the same as knowing where it is.

What reduces it: Do not rely on hearing for boat awareness. Use a marked float kept close, dive away from channels and moorings, and look up before surfacing rather than after.

Precautions that always apply here

  • Never spearfish or freedive alone.
  • Dive one up, one down: one diver down, one on the surface actively watching, every single dive.

The lateral line is the sense that makes fish behaviour hard for people to reason about, because there is no human equivalent to imagine.

WHAT IT IS. A system of mechanoreceptors — neuromasts — distributed along the flanks and head, some exposed on the surface and some sunk in canals under the skin. They respond to WATER MOVEMENT relative to the fish: the flow field around it, and the pressure differences within that field.

WHAT IT DOES. It gives a fish a picture of nearby moving objects and of the flow structure around it. It works in complete darkness and in zero visibility. It is not blocked by the fish facing away. It is central to schooling — the reason a shoal turns as a unit is that each fish senses its neighbours' movement — and to prey detection in many species, and to holding station in current.

ITS RANGE IS SHORT. The near-field flow that the lateral line responds to falls off rapidly with distance. This is genuinely important and often misstated: the lateral line is a close-range sense, roughly on the scale of a fish's own body length to a few body lengths, not a long-range alarm system.

HEARING IS SEPARATE, AND LONGER-RANGED. Fish also hear, via the inner ear and — in some groups — via the swim bladder acting as a pressure transducer coupled to the ear. Hearing sensitivity and bandwidth vary enormously between groups; some are specialists with acute low-frequency hearing, others are comparatively insensitive. Sound travels far and fast in water and is not blocked by structure.

SO A DIVER IS DETECTABLE THREE WAYS: seen at range in clear water, heard at range if noisy enough, and felt at close range through the flow they push in front of them. The third is the one that surprises people, and it is why a diver who is being very quiet can still be detected by a fish behind a rock.

What this makes sense of

Several things divers observe become explicable rather than mysterious once the sensory picture is right.

WHY A FISH IN A HOLE KNOWS YOU ARE THERE. It cannot see you. Its lateral line responds to the flow you push into the hole and to your movement close by, and it hears you if you are making noise. Approaching a hole slowly is not superstition; it is reducing the signal in the channel that is actually available to the fish.

WHY FINNING STYLE IS DISCUSSED SO MUCH. A hard, fast fin kick displaces a great deal of water. A long, slow one displaces less per unit of progress. Divers report that gentle finning allows closer approach, and unlike many practitioner claims this one has a mechanism behind it that is not in dispute — the near-field flow signal really is smaller.

WHY BUBBLES MATTER LESS THAN PEOPLE EXPECT. Breath-hold divers exhale on the surface, so the underwater bubble noise that scuba divers produce continuously is largely absent, which is one of several reasons the two activities are not comparable in their disturbance. Where bubbles are released underwater they are a noise source, but for a breath-hold diver the dominant signals are movement and flow rather than gas.

WHY SOME FISH REACT TO BOAT NOISE AT A DISTANCE AND OTHERS DO NOT. Hearing sensitivity varies enormously by group, so the same acoustic environment is a different experience for a herring and a wrasse.

What divers report, and what remains open

The most persistent belief in this area is that particular NOISES ATTRACT FISH — clicking, calling into the snorkel, tapping a gun, rattling shells. It is reported across several unrelated spearfishing traditions, which is the kind of pattern that is worth taking seriously.

WHAT IS PLAUSIBLE ABOUT IT. Sound-based attraction is documented in fisheries contexts, and several species are known to investigate low-frequency sounds — feeding sounds, struggling-fish sounds — because those signals genuinely carry information about food. There is nothing biologically odd about the claim.

WHAT IS NOT ESTABLISHED. That the specific sounds spearfishers make produce a reliable approach response in the species they are aimed at, in the field, under real conditions. FishingHQ is aware of no measurement of that, and the reports are not independent enough to constitute practitioner consensus under this platform's own definition — the register holds one spearfishing practitioner original, and one is not two.

SO THE HONEST STATE IS UNRESOLVED, and worth saying plainly: divers report it widely, the mechanism is not implausible, nobody has shown it. A reader who wants to try it is not doing anything unreasonable, and should not be told it is established.

What IS worth acting on is the inverse and it is not in doubt: reducing movement and flow disturbance reduces the signal available to the sense with the shortest range and the least escape from it.
