What a bait imitates, and why that matters

Most baits work because they resemble something the fish already eats. A few work for the opposite reason — they resemble nothing at all and have been learned as food — and the two mechanisms need completely different thinking.
THERE ARE TWO WAYS A BAIT CAN WORK AND THEY ARE NOT VARIATIONS OF EACH OTHER.
THE FIRST IS RESEMBLANCE. A ragworm is what a bass eats. A sandeel is what a pollack chases. A crab that has just shed its shell is a defenceless, briefly abundant food item that a great many inshore species actively look for. In these cases the bait IS the prey, or close enough that no learning is required, and the fishing question becomes: what is the fish eating here, now, and can I offer it?
That question is answerable, and this platform answers it — every species record carries what the fish eats, and the diet graph links prey categories to the baits that stand in for them. That link is the single most useful thing a bait page can do, and it is why FishingHQ organises baits around what they imitate rather than around a shelf.
THE SECOND IS LEARNING. Sweetcorn is not a food item in any European freshwater ecosystem. Nor is bread, luncheon meat, or a boilie. These work because fish in heavily fished waters have encountered them repeatedly, in quantity, associated with no consequence, and have learned to treat them as food. That is a genuinely different mechanism with three practical consequences.
IT IS LOCAL. A bait learned in one fishery means nothing in a water where it has never appeared. This is why a bait that is devastating on one lake does nothing on a wild river three miles away, and it is not mysterious.
IT NEEDS INTRODUCING. Loose feed, groundbait and pre-baiting are how the learning happens, and they are part of the bait rather than an optional extra.
IT DECAYS AND SHIFTS. A bait used heavily enough eventually becomes associated with being caught, and fisheries where a bait has 'gone off' are describing exactly that.
AND A THIRD CASE, SMALLER BUT REAL: BAIT THAT PROVOKES RATHER THAN FEEDS. A bunch of maggots on a hook near a spawning fish, a bait dropped repeatedly into a territory — some takes are aggression or irritation rather than feeding, and reading them as feeding leads to the wrong adjustments.
WHY THE DISTINCTION IS PRACTICAL RATHER THAN ACADEMIC. If your bait is prey, the fix for no bites is usually to change what you are imitating or where you are putting it. If your bait is learned, the fix is usually more of it, introduced properly, over a longer period. Applying the first fix to the second problem is a wasted session, and it is the commonest mistake anglers make when moving between fisheries.
