Strike indicators, and when they help

A visible marker on the leader that shows a take the angler cannot feel. It solves a real problem, imposes real costs, and is regulated as a float on some water.
A strike indicator is a visible object attached to the leader that registers a take on a sunk fly. It is a genuinely useful tool with genuine costs and it is worth being clear about both.
THE PROBLEM IT SOLVES IS REAL. A nymph fished dead-drift near the bottom gives almost no felt indication when a fish intercepts it — often the fish takes and rejects it in under a second, without moving the line perceptibly. Anglers fishing without indication miss a very large proportion of takes and generally do not know it.
WHAT IT DOES. Any hesitation, dip, sideways movement or unnatural pause in the indicator is treated as a take and answered. It also sets and holds the depth of the fly, which makes it possible to fish a consistent depth over successive drifts and to reproduce what worked.
THE COSTS ARE ALSO REAL. It lands more heavily than a bare leader and can spook fish in clear, shallow water. It fixes the fly at one depth, so it cannot follow a changing bottom. It reduces the angler's contact with the fly compared with feeling the line directly. And it fishes at the indicator's mercy in broken water where the surface itself moves the marker constantly.
WHEN IT HELPS MOST: deep or fast water, coloured water, poor light, long drifts, and beginners — for whom the improvement in take detection is dramatic and is the fastest available route to understanding what is happening under the surface.
WHEN IT HELPS LEAST: clear shallow water, very short drifts, spooky fish, and situations where the angler can see the fish take.
AND ONE REGULATORY POINT MATTERS. Some waters, fisheries and competition rules classify an indicator as a float and restrict or prohibit it, particularly on fly-only waters. The distinction between an indicator and a float is a rule rather than a fact of physics, it differs between waters, and it is the fishery's rules or the current byelaws that decide — which the angler should check for the specific water before fishing rather than assume from another one.
What an indicator costs, and the two faults it hides
An indicator solves a detection problem and creates a presentation one, and the trade is worth making far less often than the tackle available implies.
IT ANCHORS THE FLY TO THE SURFACE. Whatever the current is doing on top, the fly is now tethered to it. In water where the surface is moving faster than the bed — which is most rivers — that means the fly is being dragged downstream faster than a free-drifting nymph, at an angle, permanently. The fly looks wrong in a way the angler cannot see because the indicator is behaving beautifully.
IT SETS THE DEPTH AND THEN STOPS YOU CHANGING IT. The distance from indicator to fly is the maximum depth the fly can reach, and adjusting it is fiddly enough that most anglers do it far less often than the water changes. A run that shallows by half a metre is being fished at the wrong depth for its whole length.
IT LANDS, AND ON CLEAR SHALLOW WATER THAT MATTERS. A buoyant indicator hitting flat water above a fish is a disturbance, and on the low clear water where takes are hardest to detect it is also where the splash costs most.
AND IT HIDES TWO FAULTS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BE OBVIOUS. A slack line between rod and indicator means takes are registered late and struck later; without an indicator the angler would feel the slackness and fix it. And an indicator moves for reasons other than a fish — bottom, weed, a swirl — so an angler striking every movement is not learning what a take feels like.
WHERE IT GENUINELY EARNS ITS PLACE. Deep slow water where the fly must be far below the surface and the take is invisible; winter grayling on a slack line where nothing is felt; and teaching, where knowing that something happened matters more than presenting perfectly.
THE ALTERNATIVES ARE WORTH KNOWING BECAUSE THEY COST NOTHING. Watching the end of the fly line, watching a greased leader, watching the fish itself where the water is clear enough — a trout that opens its mouth is the most reliable indicator there is — and simply fishing a tighter line so takes are felt. Each of them fixes the detection problem without introducing the presentation one.

Grayling
A fish or a water joined to the fly-fishing mechanism it is a worked example of, written only where the subject's own behaviour or physical character is what the record explains.
