A pedal drive frees both hands, which changes the fishing more than any other single item. It also draws water in the shallows a kayak exists to reach, and it is one more thing that can fail.

A pedal drive is a mechanism in salt water with moving parts. It can jam with weed, foul on fishing line, strike ground or fail outright. A pedal kayak with no paddle aboard then has no means of propulsion at all, and a craft that cannot be moved is a rescue rather than an inconvenience.
What reduces it: Carry a paddle on every pedal kayak, secured and reachable from the seat, on every trip without exception. Raise or remove the drive before entering shallow or weedy water rather than after grounding it.
Worse when:
- Offshore or in any wind that is taking the craft away from land.
- In tidal streams the paddler could not make progress against even with a paddle.
A pedal drive is the largest practical change available to a kayak angler, and the reason is simple: it separates propulsion from the hands. Holding position against a light wind while working a lure, following a drifting line of bait, or backing off a snag are all things a paddler cannot do while fishing and a pedaller does without thinking about it.
The legs are also a far larger and more enduring engine than the arms. Over a long day, or into a headwind, a pedal drive delivers more sustained power with less fatigue, and fatigue is a safety variable rather than a comfort one.
THE COSTS ARE REAL AND THEY LAND WHERE THE KAYAK'S ADVANTAGE IS.
DRAUGHT. A propeller or fin drive hangs below the hull — typically a couple of hand-spans. A kayak's whole point is that it goes where a boat cannot: over shallow flats, through weed, across a bar, into a foot of water on a rising tide. That is exactly where a drive grounds, fouls or is damaged, and where it has to be raised or removed. Skeg-and-fin drives generally cope better than propellers, and neither copes as well as a paddle.
COMPLEXITY. It is a mechanism in salt water with moving parts, and it can jam with weed, foul on line, strike a rock, or fail. Which is why the rule that follows is not optional.
A PADDLE COMES TOO, ALWAYS, ON EVERY PEDAL KAYAK. Not in the car. On the boat, secured, reachable from the seat. A drive failure a mile offshore in a pedal kayak with no paddle is a person with no means of propulsion, and that is a rescue rather than an inconvenience.
