A slender silver Australian surf and estuary fish that feeds on worms and nippers in the wash, and is fished with light tackle over clean sand.

Sand whiting is one of the great light-tackle species of Australian shore fishing — a slim, silver, sharp-nosed fish that works the shallow wash of surf beaches and the sand flats of estuaries, sucking worms, nippers and small crustaceans out of the sand.

It feeds in remarkably shallow water, often in a few centimetres of moving wash, and anglers fish for it accordingly: light lines, small hooks, and baits presented right in the broken water where the fish are working.

It is not large, but it is fast, it fights well above its weight, and it is among the most highly regarded eating fish in Australia.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Moderately long-lived and slow-growing relative to its size, with fish recorded past ten years. Estuary-dependent as juveniles, which ties recruitment to estuarine condition.

Spawns near estuary mouths and in coastal waters in the warmer months, with juveniles using shallow estuarine sand flats as nursery habitat.

Feeding and senses

Extracts worms, nippers (ghost shrimp) and small crustaceans from sand with a small protrusible mouth, feeding in very shallow water and in the wash.

Locates buried prey at close range over sand by sight and by detecting movement in the substrate, working the disturbed zone where waves expose invertebrates.

Through the year

Most available in warm months, with the summer surf and flat fishing forming the core of the fishery. Moves to deeper estuary channels in cold periods.

Why anglers care

A principal Australian light-tackle target from surf beaches and estuary flats, taken on beach worm, nipper and small soft plastics fished on very light gear. Its significance is accessibility and eating quality: it is fished from open beaches with minimal tackle and is among the most prized table fish in Australia. Practitioner consensus is that fresh live bait — beach worm or nipper — substantially outfishes alternatives.

Handling and returning

Small and delicate with a soft mouth. Use wet hands, unhook with pliers or a disgorger, keep the fish out of dry sand, and return promptly through the wash.

Clean sand, the wash and the yabby banks

Sand whiting occupy clean sandy substrates in shallow coastal and estuarine water, and their habitat requirement is unusually specific about the bottom.

CLEAN SAND IS THE REQUIREMENT. Sand whiting feed on burrowing invertebrates — nippers or yabbies, worms, small crustaceans and bivalves — which they detect and extract from sand. Muddy, silty or weedy bottoms hold few of them, and clean firm sand holds many.

THEY WORK THE WASH AND THE SHALLOWS. Whiting feed in remarkably shallow water, frequently in the surf wash on ocean beaches and over sand flats in estuaries in a few tens of centimetres, moving with the tide onto ground the water has just covered.

SAND BANKS, DRAINS AND CHANNEL EDGES concentrate them, because the tide moves invertebrates and the fish follow the water across the flat and back off it.

ESTUARIES ARE CENTRAL. Sand whiting use estuaries and the adjacent open coast interchangeably, and juveniles rear in sheltered estuarine sand and seagrass.

TURBIDITY IS TOLERATED and the fish feed by detecting movement and scent in sand, so a coloured surf is workable habitat.

AND THE INVERTEBRATE COMMUNITY IS THE REAL HABITAT MARKER. A sand flat pocked with yabby holes is whiting ground; a clean-looking but lifeless flat is not, which is why the presence of the bait tells you more than the appearance of the bottom does.
