Bonefishing is written about almost entirely in the Caribbean, and the fish that literature describes is *Albula vulpes*. The Indo-Pacific has its own, and on the Pacific atolls where the flats fishery is most celebrated it is usually this one.
*Albula glossodonta* is a reef-associated and brackish-tolerant fish of shallow water — FishBase gives 0 to 20 m — from the Red Sea to Hawaii and the Tuamotus, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe, throughout Micronesia. It reaches 90 cm and 8.6 kg, which is larger than the Atlantic species commonly runs.
It behaves as bonefish do, which is why the fishery exists: it moves onto shallow sand and coral flats with the tide to root for crustaceans and molluscs, tailing in water sometimes barely deep enough to cover it, and it is caught by sight-casting a small fly or lure ahead of a moving fish. It is famously fast when hooked and famously difficult to approach.
**It is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable**, on a criterion of observed reduction, and that is the fact that ought to change how it is written about. Atoll bonefish populations are small, local and reachable — a flat is a finite thing — and the fishery that has grown around them is almost entirely catch-and-release for exactly that reason. Where it is not, it is netted.
So the practical content is short: this is a release fishery, the fish is Vulnerable, and how it is handled in the last thirty seconds decides whether releasing it meant anything.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Reef-associated and brackish-tolerant over a depth range of 0 to 20 m, moving onto shallow sand and coral flats with the tide and off them as it falls. Medium resilience. Atoll populations are small and geographically confined, which is central to the conservation assessment.
Bonefishes pass through a leptocephalus larval stage, which is unusual outside the eels and is part of why their population structure is hard to read. The specifics for this species are not established on the FishBase record and are not supplied from the family.
Feeding and senses
Roots in sand and rubble for crustaceans, molluscs and worms, tilting head-down so the tail breaks the surface — the tailing behaviour the whole sight fishery is built on. It crushes hard prey with plates on the tongue and palate rather than with jaw teeth.
Extremely sensitive to vibration and to shadow in shallow water, and hunting largely by scent and touch in the sand. That combination is what makes the fishing difficult: the fish cannot see a fly well and can detect a footfall on a flat from a long way off.

Available year-round on tropical flats, with the fishing governed by TIDE rather than by season — fish move onto the flat as it floods and off as it drains, and the window is a few hours rather than a few months.

Why anglers care
The flats fish of the Indo-Pacific and the target of a substantial fly and light-lure fishery across the Pacific atolls, sight-cast to moving or tailing fish on a flooding tide. It runs extremely fast when hooked, which is most of its reputation. It is assessed as Vulnerable with atoll populations that are small and local, and the sport fishery for it is almost entirely catch-and-release — which is a decision the species' status justifies rather than an affectation.
Handling and returning
Keep it in the water. A bonefish played hard in warm shallow water is exhausted and vulnerable to sharks on release, so revive it facing into the current until it swims off under its own power rather than letting it go the moment it is unhooked. Wet hands, barbless hooks, and no lifting a fish out for a photograph if it can be avoided.

What reduces it: Play the fish as quickly as the tackle allows rather than prolonging it, keep it in the water throughout, use barbless hooks, and hold it facing into the current until it swims off strongly under its own power. Move on from a flat rather than fishing it repeatedly.
