Sit-on-top and why the hull is a safety decision

The difference between a sit-on-top and a sit-inside is not comfort or preference. One can be climbed back onto in deep water and the other generally cannot, and that is the whole argument.

A sit-inside kayak that capsizes without a spraydeck fills, and a swamped hull cannot generally be re-entered in deep water. The paddler is left in the water beside a submerged object with nothing to climb onto, a long way from shore, losing heat.

What reduces it: Choose a sit-on-top for fishing, and practise re-entry from deep water in shallow, warm, sheltered conditions before it is needed. If a sit-inside is used, it needs a spraydeck, a pump, a paddle float and the trained technique to use them — which is a sea kayaking skill set rather than an angling one.

Worse when:

  • Cold water, which shortens the time available to solve the problem to minutes.
  • Any distance from shore, and any wind blowing away from it.
  • Alone, with nobody to assist a re-entry and nobody who knows where you are.

Almost every fishing kayak sold is a sit-on-top, and the reason is usually explained as convenience — easier to get on and off, somewhere to put tackle, no wet legs. Those are true and they are not the reason.

A SIT-ON-TOP IS A SEALED HULL WITH A MOULDED DECK. Water that comes aboard runs out through scupper holes and the hull itself never fills. Turn one over and right it and you have an empty boat. Because the deck is on the outside, a person in the water can pull themselves back across it and rotate into the seat, and this can be learned in an afternoon in shallow water.

A SIT-INSIDE HAS AN OPEN COCKPIT AND A LARGE INTERNAL VOLUME. Capsize it without a spraydeck and it fills. A swamped sit-inside is not a boat you climb back into: it is a submerged object with no buoyancy in the place you need to put your weight, and emptying it in deep water requires a technique, usually a partner, and equipment — a pump and a paddle float at minimum — that most anglers do not carry. Sea kayakers train for exactly this and do it well. That training is the difference, and it is not a small one.

So the honest framing is that the hull decides what a capsize IS. On a sit-on-top a capsize is a wet, cold interruption. On an unequipped, untrained sit-inside a capsize a long way from shore is the whole emergency, immediately.

This does not make a sit-inside a bad boat. It makes it a boat whose recovery is a trained skill rather than an intuitive one, and the honest position for somebody choosing a first fishing kayak is that they will not have that training.

Inflatables, cheap hulls, and what actually varies

The market runs from a two-hundred-pound inflatable to a five-thousand-pound pedal platform, and most of what separates them is comfort, capacity and fittings rather than survivability. Two things genuinely vary and are worth understanding before spending anything.

BUOYANCY WHEN SWAMPED. A sealed rotomoulded sit-on-top, an inflatable with independent chambers and a drop-stitch floor, and a foam-filled hull all float when full of water and support a person's weight. A hull with a single large air chamber, or one with hatches that are not genuinely watertight, may not. The question to ask of any craft is what it does when it is completely full — and the answer for a kayak with unsealed hatches is that it fills through them and sits low.

WINDAGE. An inflatable sits high on the water with a shallow grip on it, so wind moves it far more than it moves a low, keeled plastic hull, and it is harder to paddle against that wind. This is not a quality judgement about inflatables — they are genuinely good boats for sheltered water — it is a statement about where their limits fall, and their limits fall a long way inshore of where a rigid sit-on-top's do.

What does not vary usefully is price. There is no amount of money that makes cold water warm or an offshore wind onshore, and the fittings that cost the most — seats, drives, electronics — have nothing to do with the outcome of an immersion.
