Shooting line: monofilament or Dyneema

The line connecting shaft to gun has to survive shock loading and abrasion against rock, and the choice between the two materials is also a choice about how the line behaves when it is around a diver.

Shooting line runs from the shaft, around the muzzle and back to an attachment on the gun. It takes the entire shock of a shaft stopping in a fish, and then whatever the fish does afterwards.

MONOFILAMENT — usually a heavy nylon — stretches. That stretch absorbs the initial shock, which protects the shaft, the tip and the gun's attachment points. It is stiff enough to stay reasonably clear of itself, holds its shape, and is cheap. It abrades on rock and it degrades with UV.

DYNEEMA (and similar high-modulus polyethylene) has almost no stretch, extremely high strength for its diameter and excellent abrasion resistance. It is the choice where rock contact is likely and where thin diameter reduces drag. It is also limp, which means it tangles more readily and is harder to keep organised.

THE SHOCK-LOADING TRADE IS THE SUBSTANCE. Because Dyneema does not stretch, the peak load on the shaft, the tip and the attachment is higher for the same fish. Divers using it frequently add a short section of monofilament or a shock-absorbing element for exactly this reason — the same problem, and the same solution, as the braid-versus-mono trade in rod fishing.

AND THE SAFETY DIMENSION. Both are entanglement hazards, and Dyneema is genuinely difficult to cut with a dull knife. A diver carrying Dyneema needs a knife that will actually cut it, which is a real specification rather than a general recommendation.

Line management, which matters more than material

Whichever material is used, the way the line is stowed decides whether it behaves.

Line is wrapped on the gun's line guides under even tension so that it pays out cleanly on the shot. A loosely wrapped line loops, and a loop that catches on the muzzle or on a band as the shaft leaves is a shot that goes wrong at the moment of release.

The length is chosen so that the shaft is stopped before it reaches the end of its travel in a way that shock-loads everything — typically a multiple of the gun's length, arranged in wraps.

And the diver knows where the line is at all times. This is the point where the equipment page and the entanglement safety page meet: the shooting line is one of the diver's own entanglement sources, and the discipline that keeps it tidy is the same discipline that keeps it off the diver.

Inspection, and where it wears

Shooting line wears at three predictable points: where it passes over the muzzle, at the shaft attachment, and wherever it has been dragged over rock.

Monofilament shows abrasion as roughening and cloudiness, and it should be replaced when it has lost its smooth surface or has been UV-exposed for a long period. Dyneema shows it as furring, and a furred section is a section that has lost strength even though it looks intact.

Both are cheap and both are replaced at the first sign rather than at failure — because failure means a lost shaft, a lost tip and, if there was a fish on it, a lost fish that dies unrecovered.

Why the line's stretch is a decision about everything else

The two shooting line materials differ in one property that matters more than any other, and almost every consequence downstream follows from it: monofilament stretches and Dyneema does not.

STRETCH IS SHOCK ABSORPTION. When a shaft reaches the end of the line, or a fish accelerates against it, the energy has to go somewhere. Stretchy line converts a large part of that into elastic deformation and gives it back slowly. Non-stretch line transmits it directly to whatever is at each end: the tip in the fish, the crimp, the shaft's line attachment, and the muzzle fitting on the gun.

SO A NON-STRETCH LINE MOVES THE FAILURE POINT. It does not create shock loading; it stops absorbing it, and the components either end now take what the line used to. That is precisely why a diver moving to Dyneema should be inspecting the tip assembly, the crimps and the muzzle attachment more rather than less carefully — the line got stronger and the system did not.

ABRASION RUNS THE OTHER WAY. Dyneema is exceptionally strong for its diameter and cuts through weed and around rock better than the equivalent monofilament, which is a genuine advantage in the hole-hunting and reef ground where this gear is used. It is also thinner for the same strength, and thin non-stretch line under load cuts. That is the property that matters when it is around a diver rather than around a rock.

WHICH IS THE PART OF THIS DECISION THAT IS A SAFETY DECISION. Any line in the water around a freediver is an entanglement hazard, and the more of it, the looser it is, and the thinner and stronger it is, the worse the hazard. A tidy short line that pays out predictably is safer than a long one that loops, whatever it is made of. Line management is therefore a bigger contributor to safety than material choice, and the material choice changes what bad line management costs.

AND A DIVER SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET FREE. Carrying a cutting tool that can be reached with either hand, and knowing where it is without looking, is the standard answer to entanglement and it is not optional in this activity. A knife in a leg sheath that cannot be reached while wrapped is decoration.

WHERE IT WEARS IS PREDICTABLE. At the shaft attachment, at every crimp, where the line passes the muzzle, and anywhere it has been dragged over rock. Those are the four places to look and the inspection is the same list every time.
