Reviving a fish before release

A fish that will not swim away has not recovered, and letting go of it is not releasing it. Reviving means restoring water flow over the gills and waiting — and one widely repeated technique makes things worse.

A FISH THAT FLOATS, ROLLS OR SITS ON THE BOTTOM AFTER RELEASE HAS NOT RECOVERED. It is exhausted, oxygen-debted and unable to hold itself upright, and in that state it is easy prey and may not survive. The purpose of reviving is to get it to the point where it swims off under its own power, and that point is observable rather than a matter of judgement.

HOW TO DO IT.

HOLD THE FISH UPRIGHT AND SUPPORTED, in the water, facing into gentle current if there is any. Support under the belly and hold the tail wrist lightly.

LET WATER FLOW OVER THE GILLS. In moving water, simply facing the fish upstream does it. In still water, move the fish forwards slowly and steadily in a straight line, or hold it in a gentle figure of eight — anything that produces a steady one-way flow in through the mouth and out over the gills.

WAIT. Recovery from a hard fight takes far longer than most people expect: minutes rather than seconds, and sometimes considerably longer in warm water. Impatience is the commonest failure.

LET GO WHEN THE FISH TELLS YOU. A recovered fish holds itself upright, its gill movements become regular and strong, it grips the water with its fins, and it swims out of your hands rather than being released. Anything short of that means keep waiting.

DO NOT PUSH THE FISH BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS. This is the widely repeated technique that is actively counterproductive: water forced backwards through the gills does not exchange gas efficiently and the reverse flow can damage the delicate lamellae. Steady forward movement, or holding into current, is the correct version and it has been the correct version for a long time.

DO NOT RELEASE INTO FAST WATER. A fish that cannot swim will be tumbled by the current, and a fish tumbling downstream is not recovering.

AND KNOW WHEN REVIVING IS NOT THE ANSWER. A fish that has been played to complete exhaustion, held out of the water for a long period, or handled in high water temperatures may not recover regardless of how long you hold it. In fisheries where retention is permitted and the fish is unlikely to survive, dispatching it promptly is the better outcome than releasing a fish that will die slowly — and that is a judgement to make honestly rather than optimistically. Where retention is not permitted, the conclusion is not about that fish; it is that the fishing should stop.
