Retrieve speed and the pause

Speed sets what the lure does and how much water it covers; the pause sets what a following fish is offered — and the two are the variables an angler controls directly rather than buys.
Of everything about lure fishing, retrieve speed and pause are the two things entirely under the angler's control in the moment, which is why they deserve treating as a subject rather than as a footnote to lure choice.
SPEED does three separate things at once, and separating them makes it easier to reason about.
It sets the lure's action, because most lures behave as designed only within a range of flow speeds and become inert below it or unstable above it.
It sets depth, because a faster retrieve lifts most lures and a slower one lets them run or sink deeper.
And it sets how much water is searched per cast, which is a coverage question rather than a presentation one. A fast retrieve over a large flat is a search; a slow one over a known feature is an examination.
The PAUSE is a different variable and not simply the absence of speed. During a pause the lure's buoyancy takes over: a floater rises, a suspender hangs, a sinker falls. So a pause is a change of behaviour rather than a stop, and what it produces depends entirely on the lure's density.
The practical point that follows is that speed and pause are not independent of the lure. The same retrieve applied to three different lures produces three different presentations.
The reasoning anglers apply, and where it stops being demonstrable
The most widely held reasoning connects retrieve speed to water temperature through fish metabolism: cold water lowers a fish's metabolic rate and its capacity for sustained pursuit, so a slower presentation is thought to be more takeable. The physiology behind the premise is well established — temperature does govern fish metabolic rate — and the step from there to a retrieve speed is an inference.
A second body of reasoning concerns the pause. Anglers across many fisheries independently report that takes cluster on the pause and at the moment a retrieve restarts, and explain it as a following fish committing when the prey appears to stop or to escape.
A third concerns variation itself: that a monotonous retrieve is less productive than one whose speed changes. This is nearly universal advice and has no controlled support that FishingHQ can point to.

What is measurable, and worth measuring
Retrieve speed can be quantified rather than guessed. Line recovered per handle turn is a published or measurable figure, so turns per second times line per turn gives a rate the angler can repeat deliberately.
That matters more than it sounds. The commonest reason a productive retrieve cannot be reproduced is that it was never described in reproducible terms, and "slow" is not a description.
Counting is the low-technology version and works: a consistent count between handle turns, or a count during a fall, converts a feeling into something repeatable and communicable.
The same applies to the pause. A pause counted is a pause that can be lengthened by half and compared; a pause estimated is a variable that quietly changes with the angler's attention.
