Jig weight and fall rate

How fast a jig sinks decides how much of the water column it fishes, how long a fish has to intercept it, and whether it reaches the bottom at all in current — and it is set by weight, shape and drag together.
In jig fishing the fall is usually the productive phase, so the speed of the fall is the variable that matters most and the one most often chosen by accident.
Three things set it.
WEIGHT is the obvious one: more mass, faster descent, all else equal.
SHAPE AND SURFACE AREA are the counterweight. A flat, wide jig presents more area to the water and falls more slowly and less predictably, often fluttering or gliding; a compact, dense one falls fast and straight. Two jigs of identical weight and different profile do not fall at the same speed.
DRAG FROM EVERYTHING ATTACHED matters more than people expect. Line diameter, the length of line in the water, a trailing soft plastic, and a large hook all slow the descent. A jig fished on thick nylon in deep water falls markedly slower than the same jig on thin braid.
The consequences follow directly. A slow fall keeps the lure in front of fish for longer and is easier for a fish to intercept, and it is harder to control in wind and current. A fast fall reaches depth quickly, holds position in a tide, and gives a fish less time to decide.
And there is a control question underneath: on a slack line a jig falls vertically and the angler feels little, while on a tight line it swings back towards the angler on a pendulum arc and every touch is transmitted. Both are legitimate, and confusing them is why takes on the drop are missed.
Counting down, and turning a feeling into a number
Because a given jig in given conditions falls at a roughly constant rate, counting during the descent converts depth into something repeatable. An angler who catches at a count of twelve can return to a count of twelve, which is a far more useful piece of information than "about halfway down".
The count is not a depth measurement and does not need to be. It is an index, and it stays valid as long as the jig, the line and the conditions do not change.
Where current is running, the fall is not vertical, and the count corresponds to a diagonal path. In a strong tide a jig may never reach the bottom at all, which is the point at which weight has to increase or the drift has to be repositioned.
This is the most transferable single habit in jig fishing and costs nothing.
How weight is chosen in practice
The general working rule is to use the lightest jig that will still reach and hold the required depth in the prevailing current and wind — light enough for a slow, interceptable fall, heavy enough to keep contact.
In deep water or strong tide the constraint binds hard and weight is set by physics rather than by preference; anglers in strong-tide fisheries commonly carry a wide range of weights for exactly that reason and change them through the tide cycle rather than fishing one all day.
In still water the constraint is loose and the choice becomes a presentation decision.
The pairing of slow falls with cautious or cold-water fish, and fast falls with active fish or with the need to punch through a shallower species to reach a deeper one, is convention held across sea, predator and inshore traditions. It is reasoned rather than tested, and it is recorded that way.

What goes wrong
Fishing a jig that is too heavy because it feels more controlled, and skipping the phase where most takes happen.
Fishing one that is too light in current, so the lure never reaches the depth it was chosen for and the angler concludes the fish were absent.
Losing contact on the drop by paying out slack indiscriminately, then striking at a bite that registered several seconds earlier.
And changing line without changing anything else, then finding that a count that used to work no longer does — the jig is the same and the drag is not.
