Hook points, patterns and penetration

A hook has to rotate before it can penetrate, which is why point shape, bend geometry and the angle the line pulls from matter more than sharpness alone.

Hook penetration is a two-stage event and most explanations skip the first stage.

Stage one is ROTATION. A hook lying flat against a jaw cannot penetrate whatever its point is like; it has to turn so the point is presented into the tissue. What turns it is the pull of the line acting through the offset between the eye and the point, which is why eye orientation, shank length and bend shape decide as much as sharpness does.

Stage two is PENETRATION, and here point geometry governs. A conical point concentrates force on a single apex and is durable. A cut point — ground with flat facets and cutting edges — enters with less force and is more prone to rolling or dulling against bone. Chemically sharpened points are ground and then etched to a very fine apex; they penetrate with the least force and are the most fragile.

The two stages explain the patterns. A circle hook has a point turned sharply inwards towards the shank, so that when line comes tight the hook slides to the corner of the jaw and rotates there rather than penetrating wherever it happens to be. That geometry is the reason circle hooks are associated with lower rates of deep hooking, and it is also why striking hard at a circle hook defeats it — the hook needs to slide, and a hard strike drives it in before it has arrived.

An octopus or beak pattern has a short shank and an inturned point for bait fishing at close quarters. An aberdeen has a long shank and fine wire for delicate baits. A forged O'Shaughnessy has a heavy section for sustained load. None is generally superior; each answers a different combination of bait, species and load.

Circle hooks, deep hooking and what the release literature supports

The strongest evidence-backed statement about hook pattern concerns hooking location rather than hooking rate. Deeply hooked fish — hooked in the gullet or gills — suffer substantially higher post-release mortality than fish hooked in the jaw, and this holds across a wide range of species and gear.

Circle hook geometry is designed to reduce deep hooking by sliding to the jaw corner before rotating, and the release literature treats gear that reduces deep hooking as one of the interventions with a consistent direction of effect.

The qualification matters as much as the finding. The literature also cautions that outcomes vary between species enough that a single universal recommendation is incomplete, and the effect depends on the hook being fished as designed — bait fished on a slack or lightly loaded line, no hard strike, and the fish allowed to turn.

Keeping a point, which is mostly about what it touches

Points are blunted by rock, gravel, shell, sand and bone far more than by fish. A hook dragged across a stony bottom for an hour is not the hook that went out.

The standard field test is to draw the point lightly across a thumbnail: a sharp point bites and holds, a dull one skates. It takes a second and it is the check most consistently skipped.

Chemically sharpened points reward the check most, because they start sharper and lose it faster. Heavier conical points hold longer and never start as fine.

Sharpening by hand restores a usable point on heavier hooks and is largely futile on very fine chemically etched ones, where replacement is the realistic answer. Treble hooks on lures fished around structure are the clearest case: they are consumable.

Terminology that differs by market

Pattern names are trade names that have become generic and they do not map cleanly between countries. "Beak" and "octopus" describe overlapping shapes; "aberdeen" in Britain and in North America refer to related but not identical patterns; "baitholder" describes a shank feature rather than a bend.

The reliable description is geometric: shank length, wire gauge, bend type, point orientation and eye type. An angler who reads a hook that way can buy it anywhere; one who buys by name is buying a different hook in each market.
