Grip leads, plain leads and holding bottom

Holding ground is a grip problem rather than a weight problem, which is why a light gripped lead holds water that rolls a much heavier plain one — and why the answer changes twice within a single tide.

A gripped lead buried in sand under a running tide is freed by force stored in a bent rod and a stretched line. If the shock leader knot or the lead link fails at peak load, the lead travels back towards the angler at speed with line following it.
What reduces it: Retie the shock leader knot during a session rather than at the end of one. Free a stuck lead with a low steady sideways pull, walking back along the beach, rather than heaving upwards. If it will not come, point the rod at the lead and pull with the rod taken out of the equation so nothing is bent to spring back.

THE CENTRAL MECHANICAL PROBLEM OF SHORE FISHING ON A BIG TIDAL RANGE: the weight that sits still at slack water is rolling an hour later, and the weight that holds at full flow is unnecessary and unfishable at slack.
WHY MASS IS THE WRONG VARIABLE. A lead on the seabed is being pushed sideways by moving water. Resisting that push is a matter of FRICTION AND ANCHORING against the bottom, not of downward force. Doubling the mass of a smooth lead roughly doubles the friction; putting wires on a lighter lead lets it dig into sand and resist many times its own weight. Anglers who respond to a rolling lead by going heavier are working the least effective lever available.
THE FAMILIES, AND WHAT EACH IS FOR.
PLAIN LEADS — bombs, pears, torpedoes. Streamlined, cast well, and designed to move. On clean ground in gentle flow they are the right answer, and a plain lead that rolls slowly along the bottom is fishing rather than failing: it searches ground and finds where fish are holding.
FLAT AND WATCH LEADS. Shaped to resist rolling by presenting a flat face and a low profile. A modest step up in holding for no mechanical complexity, and useful on shingle and gravel where wires cannot dig.
GRIP LEADS. Wires — fixed or swivelling — that dig into sand and hold hard. FIXED WIRES hold best and have to be broken out by force, which is punishing on tackle and on the angler. BREAKAWAY GRIP LEADS have wires held in a clip that releases under a sharp pull, so the lead grips while fishing and comes back streamlined. This is the standard answer to a strong tide over sand and it is one of the genuinely good pieces of tackle design in shore fishing.
WHAT DECIDES WHICH ONE, IN ORDER. THE BOTTOM: wires need sand or fine gravel to bite into and do nothing on rock or hard shingle. THE FLOW: the strength of the tidal stream, which changes continuously through the cycle. THE SEA STATE: undertow and surge in breaking surf move a lead more than the tidal stream does. THE GROUND'S SNAG RISK: a gripped lead in rough ground is a lost lead.
AND THE THING NOBODY MENTIONS: HOW MUCH SPARE LINE IS OUT. Line in the water is a sail. A tight line to a gripped lead holds; a bow of slack line in the tide pulls the lead out no matter what it weighs. On many marks, tightening down and lifting the rod tip to keep line out of the water does more for holding than any change of lead.
THE PRACTICAL SEQUENCE when a lead will not hold: tighten the line and raise the tip; move to a gripped pattern rather than a heavier plain one; then, only then, go heavier. And accept that at peak flow on some marks the honest answer is that the ground is unfishable for an hour.
The lead you need changes twice in a session, and changing it should cost you nothing
The description says the answer changes within a tide. This is how to arrange your tackle so that changing it is a thirty-second job rather than a reason to keep fishing the wrong lead.
WALK THE CYCLE. On a mark with a real range, a session usually goes: SLACK WATER, where a plain bomb sits still and searches ground as it rolls slowly; THE FIRST OF THE FLOW, where a flat or watch lead buys another hour; PEAK FLOW, which on many marks is the only time a gripped lead is justified at all; and THEN THE WHOLE THING IN REVERSE. An angler who ties on a fixed-wire grip lead at the start and leaves it there has fished three quarters of the session over-gripped, which costs distance, costs feel, and makes every retrieve a fight.
USE A LEAD CLIP OR A LINK, NOT A KNOT. If the lead is tied in, changing it means breaking down the rig, and the practical consequence is that nobody changes it. A clip, a link or a simple lead-link at the end of the rig body turns the decision into something you actually make. This is the single cheapest change most shore anglers can make to how they fish.
BREAKAWAY WIRE TENSION IS ADJUSTABLE AND ALMOST NOBODY ADJUSTS IT. The wires sit in a clip and pop out under load. How much load is set by how deep the wire ends are pushed in, and by the angle they are bent to. Set light and the lead releases when a wave hits and you are fishing a plain lead by accident; set hard and you are breaking out by main force. The way to find it is to set it, cast, and pull — the wires should release with a firm sweep of the rod, not a heave.
AND THE HONEST DIAGNOSTIC. If you are unsure whether the lead is holding, put a slow half-turn on the reel and watch the tip. A held lead loads the tip and stops. A lead that is moving lets the tip come back. That takes two seconds and answers the question that anglers otherwise spend an hour guessing at.

Breaking out a gripped lead, and the two ways it goes wrong
This is the part of grip leads that is a safety topic rather than a tackle topic, and it is why this record now carries hazards.
WHAT A BREAKOUT ACTUALLY IS. A fixed-wire lead buried in sand under a running tide can need a great deal of force to move. That force is stored in a bent rod and a stretched line, and when the lead comes free the energy has to go somewhere. Usually it goes into the retrieve harmlessly. Occasionally the line or the link fails at peak load, and a lead comes back towards the angler at speed with a shock leader following it.
THE TWO FAILURE POINTS ARE THE KNOT AND THE LEAD LINK. A shock leader knot that has been cast fifty times, dragged through shingle and left in the sun is the weak point in this system, and it fails under exactly the load a breakout applies. Retie it during a session rather than at the end of one. A cheap stamped lead link with a thin wire eye is the other, and it is the item most worth spending on.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD OF HEAVING. Walk backwards along the beach rather than pulling up: a low, steady, sideways pull changes the angle the wires are loaded at and usually frees them without shock loading anything. If it will not come, point the rod straight at the lead, take the line in a gloved hand or over the spool, and pull steadily — so that when it goes, it goes with the rod out of the equation and nothing bent to spring back.
AND ON ROUGH GROUND, PLAN TO LOSE IT. A gripped lead in kelp or rock is not going to come back. A deliberately weak link between the rig body and the lead — lighter line, a rotten bottom — means you lose the lead and recover the rig, the trace, and any fish on it. Fishing rough ground with the lead as the strongest part of the system is how a snag becomes a lost fish rather than a lost weight.
