*Kyphosus sectator* is a sea chub: an oval, silvery, small-mouthed fish of shallow rock, recorded by FishBase from 1 to 30 m and usually within 10 m, reaching 76 cm and 6 kg. FishBase gives its distribution simply as circumglobal.

What makes it interesting to an angler is diet. Sea chubs are largely HERBIVOROUS, grazing benthic algae off rock, with invertebrates taken incidentally. That is unusual on this ground and it changes how the fish is caught. The Madeiran creel survey records that 77.9% of the archipelago's shore anglers use BREAD, and a weed-grazing fish with a small mouth working the top few metres of a harbour wall is a large part of the reason a bait like that is standard on an island where the headline species are sparids.

It shoals, often in numbers, and it feeds hard in surge and white water where algae is being torn off rock. Hooked, it is powerful for its size and dives for cover immediately — a deep-bodied fish with a broad tail in shallow water beside rock is a difficult combination on light tackle.

AT 0.53% OF THE MADEIRAN SHORE CATCH it sits mid-table, which understates it: a grazing fish taken on floated bread is exactly the kind of catch that goes unrecorded relative to how often it happens.

The genus is taxonomically unsettled. *Kyphosus sectator* and *K. sectatrix* have been repeatedly confused and combined in the literature, and a source naming a Macaronesian `chopa` is not necessarily naming this species rather than its neighbour. That is stated here rather than resolved, because resolving it needs a specimen and not a search.

Lifecycle and reproduction

Reef-associated from 1 to 30 m and usually within 10 m, circumglobal in subtropical seas. FishBase rates resilience LOW. Juveniles associate with floating weed offshore before settling to shallow rock.

A broadcast spawner over shallow reef. The FishBase record carries no detailed account, and the genus-level confusion between sectator and sectatrix means published work needs checking for which fish it describes.

Feeding and senses

Grazes benthic algae off shallow rock with a small mouth and specialised gut, taking small invertebrates incidentally. It feeds hardest in surge and white water where weed is being stripped from the rock, and it takes bread, weed and soft baits fished on or just under the surface.

Daylight close-range grazing in shallow, broken water, working the same stretch of rock in a shoal and locating weed by sight at very short range. Because it is grazing rather than hunting, it is not looking for movement, and a bait presented as drifting food in the surge is treated very differently from one that behaves like prey.

Through the year

Present year-round on shallow Atlantic island rock. Feeding is driven by swell and surge rather than by season — the fish grazes hardest when weed is being torn off the rock, so a day of movement in the water is worth more than a month of the calendar, and a flat calm is the condition that puts it off rather than a cold one.

Distribution

Circumglobal — which is the entirety of what FishBase states in prose for this species, checked on two mirrors rather than assumed to be a truncation. Its environment record bounds the range at 46°N to 29°S and 98°W to 16°E, and the Madeiran shore-angling survey records it from that archipelago. The terseness is itself informative: this is a genus whose species limits are unsettled, and a one-word range is what that looks like in a database.

No venom, no teeth of consequence and no serious spines — an easy fish in the hand. It is powerful and slippery, so wet hands and support the body. Its flesh is variable in quality and it is often returned.
