A carbon pole is a long electrical conductor held horizontally and shipped out and back over a bank. Contact with, or close approach to, an overhead power line does not require touching it: electricity arcs across a gap, and the result is usually fatal.

What reduces it: Look up before setting up, and keep the whole shipping arc well clear of any overhead line. Treat the presence of a line as a reason to fish somewhere else rather than a reason to be careful, because the hazard is a length of pole and a moment's inattention rather than a decision.

A pole is a long telescopic or take-apart rod with no reel, used to place a rig directly rather than to cast it, and it is worth understanding even by anglers who will never own one because it is the clearest demonstration of what casting costs.

HOW IT WORKS. Sections are joined to make a length, the rig hangs from the tip on a fixed line, and the angler ships the pole out over the water and lowers the rig into position. To land a fish, sections are unshipped from the butt end until only a short top section remains. There is no cast, no reel and no line to manage between rod and float.

WHAT THAT BUYS. Absolute precision — a bait can be placed within a few centimetres of a feature, repeatedly, in wind. Complete line control, because there is no bow of line between rod tip and float to be dragged by wind or current. And the ability to fish extremely light terminal tackle, because the elastic shock absorber in the tip cushions everything.

THE ELASTIC IS THE PART THAT MAKES IT WORK AND THE PART NOBODY EXPLAINS. A length of solid or hollow elastic runs inside the top sections, anchored inside and attached to the rig at the tip. It stretches, sometimes to several times its length, and that is what allows hooklengths measured in ounces to hold fish measured in pounds. Choosing and setting elastic is the single most consequential decision in pole fishing, and getting it wrong produces either bumped-off fish or broken hooklengths.

A WHIP IS THE SIMPLE VERSION AND IS BADLY UNDERRATED. A short telescopic pole with a fixed line and usually no elastic, used for small fish at close range. It is cheap, needs almost no setting up, catches a great deal for a beginner or a child, and is close to the fastest way to catch small fish that exists.

AND THE CONSTRAINTS ARE REAL. A pole is limited to its own length, it is unusable in overhead obstructions or in deep water at range, it is heavy at the extremes, and it is genuinely dangerous near overhead power lines — a long conductive carbon tube held horizontally is precisely the hazard the catalogue's overhead-lines record exists for.

What it does

Places a rig rather than casting it. Sections are joined to reach the required length, the rig hangs on a fixed line from the tip, and the pole is shipped out and back to fish and to land. Because there is no line between a rod tip and a float, wind and surface drift cannot pull the presentation out of position — which is why a pole holds a bait exactly where it was put in conditions that would make a float rod unusable, and why match anglers use one wherever the range allows.

How to choose one

  • Length is bought at the cost of weight and stiffness, and the useful length is the one you can hold steady for hours rather than the one you can lift once.
  • Elastic rating is the decision that matters most: too light and fish are played to a standstill and lost, too heavy and fine hooklengths part. It is matched to the hooklength and the size of fish rather than to the pole.
  • Top kits are consumable and are bought in multiples deliberately, each set up with a different elastic, so that changing approach is changing a section rather than restringing.
  • A whip needs none of this. For small fish at close range a simple telescopic whip with a fixed line is quicker to use, far cheaper, and frequently more effective.
  • Shipping space matters more than most people expect. A sixteen-metre pole needs sixteen metres of clear ground behind the angler, and a great many banks do not have it.
  • Carbon poles conduct electricity and are long. Overhead power lines are the specific and lethal hazard, and distance from them is not negotiable.

What the numbers mean

Length in metres is the headline and says nothing about usability: two poles of the same length can differ enormously in weight and in how much they bend under their own mass. Elastic is numbered, with the numbers rising with strength, and the numbering is a convention rather than a standard — one maker's number eight is not another's. Section counts and whether sections are put-over or put-in change how quickly a pole ships and how robust the joints are. 'Match' and 'margin' descriptions describe intended use rather than a measured property. There is no standard for stiffness, so the only reliable test is holding one out horizontally in a shop and deciding whether you could still do it in four hours.

Care, and how it fails

Sections break where they are pinched, which is almost always at a joint under a shipping load or where a section has been trodden on. Grit in a joint is the commonest cause of a section jamming and then breaking when it is forced apart. Rinse and dry sections, never force a stuck joint, and keep the mating surfaces clean. Elastic degrades with ultraviolet light and with age, and it fails without warning: replacing it on a schedule rather than on symptoms is standard practice. The most expensive failure is a pole shipped back over a hard bank and dropped, which is a handling habit rather than an accident.
