Spawning aggregations, and why they are vulnerable

A spawning aggregation concentrates a large share of a population's reproduction into one place at one time, in fish that are approachable and large — which makes it the easiest fishing there is and the most consequential.
This is the single most important conservation concept in the spearfishing vertical, and it is the situation in which the method's usual defence stops protecting anything.
WHAT AN AGGREGATION IS. Many marine fish do not spawn where they live. They travel — sometimes tens or hundreds of kilometres — to specific sites at specific times, frequently tied to season, to lunar phase and to tide, and gather there in numbers far above their normal density. Groupers, snappers, jacks and many others do this. The sites are traditional and are used year after year.
WHY THEY ARE SO VULNERABLE. Four things at once.
CONCENTRATION. A large proportion of a population's breeding adults may be in one place for a few days.
PREDICTABILITY. The site and the timing are knowable, and once known they stay known.
BEHAVIOUR. Aggregating fish are frequently preoccupied and allow much closer approach than the same fish would at any other time — including fish that are normally unapproachable.
SIZE. The fish present are mature adults, which are the fish everybody wants and the fish the population can least afford to lose.
AND THE FAILURE MODE IS HIDDEN. Catch rates at an aggregation stay high while the underlying population falls, because the remaining fish still gather. The fishing feels good right up until the aggregation stops forming. That is the mechanism by which documented aggregations have declined sharply, and in a number of cases ceased to form at all.
WHY THIS IS ABOUT SPEARFISHING SPECIFICALLY. A spearfisher at an aggregation is choosing each fish individually — and every fish available to be chosen is a breeding adult at the moment of breeding. Selectivity, which normally means avoiding the fish that should not be taken, means nothing here, because there are none of those present.
Science, management and ethics, kept apart
This subject attracts strong opinions, so it is worth separating what kind of statement each part is.
WHAT THE SCIENCE ESTABLISHES. That transient aggregations exist and are predictable; that they concentrate reproductive output; that catch rates mask decline; and that specific documented aggregations have collapsed following sustained fishing. These are findings.
WHAT MANAGEMENT DOES ABOUT IT. Seasonal closures timed to spawning, spatial closures over known aggregation sites, gear restrictions, and in some places protection of the species regardless of location. Which of these applies anywhere is a local and changing question that FishingHQ does not answer.
WHAT PRACTITIONER ETHICS ADDS. A widely held convention among divers that aggregations are left alone, and a much older version of the same conclusion in Pacific customary management, where closures on aggregation sites are documented long before the science described them. That convergence is itself interesting: two entirely separate traditions arriving at the same restriction.
WHAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED. How much fishing a given aggregation can absorb; whether aggregations that have ceased to form can re-establish and over what timescale; and how far the findings from well-studied reef species transfer to temperate species whose spawning behaviour is less well described. FishingHQ does not have those answers and neither does anybody else.
WHAT A DIVER CAN DO WITHOUT ANY OF THAT BEING SETTLED is recognise one when they are in it: unusually high density, unusually large fish, unusual approachability, at a predictable time of year. Recognising it is most of the decision.

The wider point about selectivity
The aggregation case is where the general argument about this method becomes concrete, which is why it belongs at the centre of the conservation family rather than at the edge of it.
Selectivity protects a population when the thing being avoided is present to be avoided — undersized fish, protected species, females carrying eggs, the wrong species entirely. At an aggregation none of those is the issue. Every fish is the right species, over size, and breeding.
So the property that makes spearfishing defensible in ordinary conditions provides no protection at all in the one situation where protection matters most. That is not an argument against the method. It is an argument for understanding what the method's advantage actually consists of, which is what an intelligence platform is for.
The same reasoning applies more weakly in ordinary fishing, and it is worth carrying: a diver who takes the largest fish available is taking from the most reproductively productive part of the population, every time, by design. Whether that matters depends on how much is taken and from how large a population — which is a question about total removal rather than about any individual decision.
