Cold hands, feet and cramp

Cold extremities and cramp are the same underlying problem arriving in two forms, and both are warnings — cramp in a fin at depth is a genuine emergency and cold hands are the loss of the ability to solve one.

Cold removes fine motor control before the diver notices, so the ability to release a belt, use a knife or clear a tangle is lost. Cramp at depth prevents efficient ascent.

What reduces it: Thermal protection matched to the water including hood and gloves, well-fitting foot pockets with socks, hydration, shorter cold-water sessions, and leaving the water when shivering stops or hands fumble.

The body protects its core by reducing blood flow to the extremities. That is why hands and feet go first, and why the loss is progressive and largely unnoticed until something needs doing with them.

WHAT COLD HANDS ACTUALLY COST. Fine motor control. The things a diver may suddenly need to do — release a weight belt, operate a knife, clear a tangle, work a buckle — are exactly the tasks that fail first. A diver whose hands have stopped working has lost their ability to respond to the emergencies the rest of this family describes, and they usually have not registered it.

CRAMP is a different mechanism with overlapping causes: cold muscle, dehydration, electrolyte loss, sustained exertion, and ill-fitting foot pockets that make the calf work in an unnatural position. Calf and foot cramp are the common ones because finning loads them continuously.

CRAMP AT DEPTH IS AN EMERGENCY. A diver who cannot fin cannot ascend efficiently, at the point in the dive where efficiency matters most. The response is to stop finning, stretch the muscle — for calf cramp, pulling the fin tip towards you — ascend calmly using the arms and the other leg, and signal the buddy.

AND THEN END THE SESSION. Cramp recurs, and it recurs faster once it has happened. A second cramp on a later dive is more likely and will happen to a colder, more tired diver.

Prevention, which is mostly not about toughness

PROPER THERMAL PROTECTION for the water, including hood, gloves and socks. A hood matters disproportionately because a large share of heat is lost from the head and neck, and an attached hood removes the neck gap that flushes cold water down a diver's back with every movement.

FOOT POCKETS THAT FIT, with socks. Pockets sized without socks will be too tight with them, and a tight pocket restricts circulation and causes both cold feet and cramp.

HYDRATION. Immersion causes fluid loss faster than divers expect, and dehydration contributes to cramp and to poor judgement together.

SHORTER SESSIONS IN COLD WATER, and accepting that the sensible session length in British or Scandinavian water in winter is a fraction of what the same diver manages in the Mediterranean in August.

AND WARMING UP PROPERLY BETWEEN SESSIONS rather than staying marginally cold all day, which is how a diver reaches the afternoon with no reserve left.

The signal that ends the dive

There is a specific one worth naming: cold that has stopped feeling cold.

Shivering is the body working. Shivering that has stopped, while the diver is still in cold water, is not an improvement — it can indicate that thermoregulation is failing, and it arrives alongside the clumsiness and poor decision-making that make everything else worse.

Other signals with the same conclusion: hands that fumble a simple buckle, difficulty speaking clearly at the surface, or a diver who has become quiet and compliant when they were not before. A buddy is better placed to notice the last two than the diver is.

The correct response to all of them is to leave the water, and this is one of the places where the honest answer to a troubleshooting question is not a technique.
