Barotrauma and pressure injury — Can cause serious injury or death
Hapuku are taken from very deep water and suffer major swim bladder expansion; a released fish will not survive without assistance.
What reduces it: Plan the session around retention or release before fishing, carry and use a descending device, and avoid repeatedly hooking and releasing fish at depth.

The bony ridge and spine on the gill cover cause deep cuts when a heavy fish is handled aboard.
What reduces it: Handle with gloves, support the body rather than gripping the head, and keep hands clear of the gill cover.
Hapuku is the great deepwater prize of New Zealand and southern Australian fishing — a heavy, blunt-headed wreckfish taken from pinnacles, foul ground and drop-offs, often in a hundred metres of water or considerably more.
It is extremely slow-growing and long-lived, matures late, and aggregates on specific structure. Every one of those traits makes it vulnerable, and known hapuku marks have been fished down repeatedly — a well-documented pattern in New Zealand fisheries.
Juveniles live a pelagic life associated with drifting debris before settling to the bottom, which is a genuinely different early life from the adult existence on deep reef.

Lifecycle and reproduction
Very slow-growing, late-maturing and long-lived. Juveniles are pelagic and associate with floating debris for their first year or more before settling onto deep reef, where they may remain for decades.
Spawns in winter and spring on deep reef and pinnacle ground, with larvae and juveniles living pelagically near the surface before settling.
Feeding and senses
Takes fish, squid and crustaceans on and near deep reef and pinnacle structure, engulfing prey with a large mouth and a powerful suction strike. Feeding is opportunistic rather than selective, and the fish holds close to structure rather than ranging over open ground.
An opportunistic predator of deep, dark structure, relying on lateral-line detection and scent as much as on sight in low-light conditions at depth.
Through the year
Largely resident on deep structure through the year, with spawning concentrated in winter and spring. Access is governed by sea conditions more than by fish behaviour.

Why anglers care
A premier deepwater target in New Zealand and southern Australia, taken on heavy bait rigs and deep jigs over pinnacles and foul ground. Its significance is size and eating quality, and its slow growth is the reason many anglers and charter operators self-limit catches at known marks. FishingHQ does not state what any rule is; deepwater species rules vary and change.
Handling and returning
Fish from these depths suffer severe barotrauma and released fish cannot return down unaided. Decide before fishing deep whether fish will be retained or released, and carry a descending device if release is intended. Support large fish horizontally, and take care with the sharp gill-cover spine.
A deep-water grouper that arrives already injured
Hapuku are taken from serious depth — commonly well beyond a hundred metres — and that single fact governs everything about handling them.
BAROTRAUMA IS NOT A RISK HERE, IT IS THE DEFAULT. A fish brought up from that depth has undergone a pressure change of more than ten atmospheres. The swim bladder gas has expanded many times over, and the internal damage is frequently beyond what recompression can undo. Unlike shallower rockfish, a hapuku is often not a realistic release candidate at all.
SO THE DECISION IS MADE BEFORE THE DROP. Deep-water bottom fishing for this species is a retention fishery in practice. If you are not intending to keep what you catch, fishing that depth for this species is choosing to kill fish and put them back. That is the honest framing, and it is a more useful thing to know than any grip.
IF A FISH MUST BE RELEASED — because it is undersized, or over the bag — recompress it with a weighted descender and accept that the odds are poor. Do not vent a fish from this depth casually; the volume of gas and the internal displacement make it a much less predictable intervention than on a shallow-caught fish.
HANDLING ON DECK IS ORDINARY BY COMPARISON. Large, heavy, no significant dentition, no venomous spines. The weight is the hazard to the fish: support the body horizontally rather than lifting by the jaw, and on a moving deck a large one is a hazard to shins and fingers.
AND SIZE IS A CONSERVATION QUESTION. Hapuku are slow-growing and long-lived, aggregate on specific structure, and are depleted in parts of their range. A mark that produces large fish repeatedly is not an inexhaustible mark.
